Project 629 Canadian Mountain Revolver

OK 629 guys, here is the mission, as patient as I have been waiting for the 4.2" 629's that North Sylva is putting together I must admit I was disappointed when I heard that they would arrive with a full underlug. I know many of you prefer that, but from a personal sense of preference and variety I was hoping for the partial underlug.

Where did you hear that it's going to be made with the full underlug, if I may ask?

I haven't seen any indication as to what we're getting, in the "official" thread:
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?665096

I would prefer the partial underlug myself.

I did a winter project some time ago and cut back the barrel of my 5" S&W629-6 to Canadian Legal Restricted 106mm. I did get the new barrel length certified, had the revolver re-registered, and was sent a new Regestration card indicating that the barrel length is now 110mm (yes, it also did not make sense to me). The legal process was an interesting experience, getting many and very varied reactions and comments from LEO's, none of which proved to be correct in the end!

All work was done by hand, using only an electrical hand drill to drill and re-attach the smaller and reduced front sight. Hammer was bobbed, cylinder release rounded off as it skinned my thumb within 10 shots. Grips are old wooden ones made to fit. All action parts where polished with 1500 grit paper and DA is very smooth. Frame still needs more polishing, but is fine for playing around and shooting on the range. Accuracy with full loads over a rest is about 2" at 10-12 yards, not bad for my old eyes and a crowning job done by hand (no tools except some files and a small carpenter's square!). Factory Winchester 240gr JSP ammo chronos at 1231ft/s from this barrel (106.45mm), 1414ft/s from a 7.5" Ruger SRH, 1422ft/s from my 9.5" Ruger SRH, 1499ft/s from a 10.5" Ruger SBH and 1758ft/s from my 20" Marlin 1894.

Sorry, my "Canadian Custom 001" is not for sale.

That sir is beautiful, nicely done.
We had discussed the cut back of a six inch barrel with partial underlug but considered the work in moving sights, crowning the barrel, and where the markings would sit on the existing barrel when we cut. We had not thought of going much below 5 inches which is why I offered up my classic as the starting platform. Looking at that, I am impressed with the balanced look of the 4.5 over the partial underlug. Maybe cutting back the 6 inch to 4.5 is the way to go. That has very nice proportion. You guys are killing me, I may have to sell the wife and kids to Oil Sheikhs to fund all of this!!!!!

When I cut my 8 3/8" 29-2 down, I ended up going with 4.5". I like the length, but if doing it again I might choose 5" for two reasons: I really miss my 27 5", and the rollmark would be pretty much perfectly centered. I know it doesn't affect function, but it just doesn't look quite right.

I think I will still pursue the project to create a 5" partial underlug to see how it turns out. I will keep you posted with photo's of the final product.
Cheers,

They arrived this week at North Sylva, going out to dealers now, around the $950.00 - $999.00 range. The guys at North Sylva did a nice job working with S&W on these. Absolutely beautiful, much nicer in than even the 4.2" 686 they did last year. That big N Frame revolver screams horsepower with that 4.2" barrel and partial underlug.

What dealers are they going out too? Where can i get on a waiting list? How did you get yours?

Just called P&D Enterprises, they already have a list going. I just put down the 20 percent required and added myself to the list! Awesome! Cant wait to get this gun, been wanting one for awhile. Already have the 686 with 4.2 inch barrel, but its not as ###y looking as this one.
