Well the first cut of the alphalfa feilds is being completed over the weekend and into this comming week. The freshly planted feilds are getting the tender little greens up now and the dirt pigs are out in force. I counted 11 on one feild at one time last week. The biggest of the bunch was the size of a raccoon:eek: The project has been initialized for Moday afternoon with a couple long range precision shooters attending with me. The tools for the day will be Bushnell elite rangefinders, two Browning Varmint Stalkers in 25 WSSM and 243 WSSM, Remington VS SF in 220 Swift with another in 220 Swift. A T/C ProHunter in 204 Ruger will also make its first grownd hawg kill. We're hoping to eliminate about 30 to 40 hole diggers in about 7 or 8 hours. This project will be photo documented and posted Tuesday for the enjoyment of all. I just can't get enough of ventilating those little buggers.

Well gee Tod, I don't recall ever mentioning any names in my post! Please explain how you have pieced together that assumption. Just to be on record I have attended while our member in question has successfully nailed a 498 yard shot on a ground hawg pup with a 20 km 45 degree cross wind on a humid summer day. Now we just have to top that tomorrow! I can't wait to see the hole a 6.5mm 108 grain Lapua Senar leaves in a hawg.

Chilly shoots Remingtons... somebody has to bring a real gun...:sniper:
Big Mike is shooting with us today, he shoots a Sako Custom in 6.5/284 BA Improved... I am expecting him to break some records today.
I have my Sony in the pack so maybe we can get some video?

Man you guys are lucky. yotes took out any earth pigs where it is legal to shoot but there are hordes of them in the city. Sucks big time.

Looks like we need more yotes in the city :D I agree with you, they seem to be everywhere in Ottawa, but less populated in the country than 20 years ago.

Well it was just a fantastic day! Shooting was constant from 12:00 until 6:30. Finnal tally was 25 dirt pigs from 43 yards out to 440 yards. The one field with newly planted alphalfa was on fire, and we were nailing them along the edges like crazy. Some were as big as raccoons, some as small as prarie dogs. There were a couple very impressive shots, and some brutal impacts. The 6.5mm was lifting them into the air 2ft and back 5ft. It was a great day of safe shooting and varminting at its best.

"...yotes took out any earth pigs where it is legal to shoot..." Rest assured that Wiley didn't get them all. If you're hunting ground hogs, you have a small game licence. Go shoot Wiley.

Brings back memories Chilli.
Of course years ago, we hunted them with a 22, and had to stalk the little buggers. Even learned their high pitched whistle.
Some times, they'd stand right up out of their hole to see who was whistling. {Bang!}

When I got in last night I figured I best off get to cleaning the rifles. I've never had so much dust and dirt on a gun before. It took me twice as long as usual to get everything wiped down and cleaned. Ran the bore snakes a couple times in prep for a real good cleaning in the next couple days. Just wait until Redd posts up some of the select pictures.....Sure was a bad day to be a dirt pig! Round two will likely be next week once the main feilds have all been cut.

Bang, bang

It was 495 chilly, I was the one on the rangefinder :D

Where are the pics and video's

My 6.5 Scenars made a mess last time we were out, but I bet Mikes AI 284 is 4-500 FPS faster. I bet it made a mess. ####ers

Some had no heads, some had exit holes that you could fit your fist into. I nailed one walking away from my position with my 243WSSM and a 70 grain BT @ 3800 FPS...it ripped him wide open from end to end. One was hit with the 6.5/284 AI @ 250 yards and blew it into the air at least 3 feet. The 220 Swift was bang on again yesterday but was retired in favour of the more dramatic terminal performance of the 243. The Ruger 204 was very impressive even out to 440 yards but lacked any real carniage. Pics and video should be up tonight

The rifle Mike was using was a JB Improved 6.5X284... very impressive indeed... fireforming and using 120's he was smoking them out to 400!

Here is what the Sako Custom did to more than a few!

Deans 243wssm made for some dramatic acrobatics

I made the longest shot of the day with the .204 on this one at 440 yards... the wind pushed the bullet about 8 inches... I was thinking head shot and it went right in his ear:D

By mid afternoon we had 18 or 19 dead groundhogs in one 20 acre field... The buzzards were going crazy!

It was a good afternoon... I think we killed 25 dirt pigs alltogether... next time the all fields should be cut and were gonna shoot for 50!:)
