Project: IDPA SP01 Shadow...

Ok, Mainspring cover is out - and yes, my mainspring Tore across the room ! LMAO. (learning is fun).

#3: remove the mainspring cover. Last option IMHO, but some like it as they feel it does not impede the performance of the pistol or disrupt their reloads.
Benefits are it is easy to do, and costs nothing. I don't recall what the weight of the mainspring housing is worth, but I think it hovers in the 0.6 gram mark.

Mainspring cover weight : 0.15 - 0.20 oz. (a 0.05 oz variance)

Shadow with Mainspring cover removed & magazine inserted : 38.35 oz

*I can't wait for the AL grips to get here so I can weigh them.

I found a European website that has the Aluminum grips for purchase from CZCustom.com (the ones I ordered) at 0.055kg (1.94oz) !!!

I CAN'T WAIT !

If this is accurate, it should put me here :

Gun STOCK without OEM Grips : 38.65 oz
CZ Aluminum Red Grips--------: 1.94 oz
______________________________________
--------------------------Total of : 40.59 oz Damn.

This is all just numbers until I have the actual grips on & everything weighed....

I hope this is helping guys.

Just pulled my Guide rod & found out it's already the plastic one, so no dropping weight there.

I'll pull the rear sight next & weigh it.

Question can you use a CZ magwell in IPSC production matches?

I plan to shot both later this year, but if I can use a magwell in IPSC production then I would buy the Aluminum short grips to make weight for IPDA and just take of the magwell. thinking the shorter grips will be less weight & still work for both sports.

No. Not for production. If you install it you could shoot Standard or Open. No external modifications to a pistol are allowed. Same for IDPA SSP. (other than sight replacement).

CFRAM sells the CZ grips I bought a pair from them last year great service and they are a site sponser.

Nothing wrong with a vise (not "vice" :D) if the jaws are clamped just firmly enough to hold it while the brass punch and hammer is used to clear the sight out of the dovetail. They key is to pad it with some heavy card stock to avoid marking the surface. Also be sure you grab the sides of the slide so that the impact pressure from removing the sight is directed into one of the jaws. THAT is how you avoid having to grab the snot out of it.

Sadly looking at the CZ Custom shop web site I'm not seeing and truly compact and notably lighter rear sight options.

However there is some good news. On their page for grips at;

h ttp://czcustom.com/CZ-75-85-TS-Grips-Aluminum-Plastic-Rubber.aspx

they show the plastic grips as weighing 0.6 oz. With your gun and mag with no grips at 38.35oz adding the plastic grips at 0.6 oz puts the total to 38.95 oz. Just a bare hair under the limit. The aluminium grips at 1.6 clearly won't work out for IDPA.

just dont use that one mag when you shoot ipsc, problem solved

All of the mags you use for IDPA would need to be modified in a similar fashion if it is to make weight. So that would mean running at least three mod'ed for IDPA and four or five regular mags for IPSC. (not such a big deal in the grand scheme of things)

Here are some photos of my rear sight modification:
Not pretty, and I'm sure a proper gunsmith could do a way better job, but it works just fine and the sight picture is the same anyhow.
For IPSC I use the aluminum grip on the right and the stock rubber grip on the left (I'm a lefty) and this seams to work great to reach the mag release with no shift in my strong hand grip.
For IDPA use I'd be switching out my grips to the Marshall's. I generally like to shoot other divisions like CDP and ESR when I have time to play in IDPA, so I've really not done much swapping over.

re: Sight modification

Thats Fantastic ! I wonder why they aren't like that to begin with ?

How did you shave it down ?
-On or off the slide/gun
-Metal File ?
-Polish ? or just re-blue it?

Any idea how much weight you dropped ?

I see said the blind man. Sounds like a good way to go and although I have used vises for similar jobs before I assumed the worse. You see, for some their vice is abusing tools and I guess I jumped to that conclusion!Laugh2

This is a great thread. Picked up some Marschall grips a few days ago and I will weigh my new shadow when I pick it up early next week. I have heard that there can be bit of a spread in the weights of individual shadows, but I bet that there is a bigger difference in scales that have been used to weigh them.

It looks like I will probably be slightly over IDPA weight after just changing the grips, but am thinkin that I will install a plastic guide rod for the very limited IDPA stuff that I plan on doing if I need to lighten it a little more.

I took the rear sight off and placed it in a vise.
I started with taking the major chunk out with a saw (you can see where it danced around slightly on the top forward portion).
I then just went at it with a bastard file, finishing it off with a finer toothed one.
It was finished with cold blue.
In hind sight, I'd just use the file and skip trying to save time with the saw.
If I cared how pretty it is, I'd look at a Ceracoat or something similar instead of just the cold blue finish. This thing sees a lot of holster and shooting, so I'm not all that concerned with that.

Nice thread!
I've been thinking of putting my Shadow on IDPA diet and this meal-plan sounds great! Already ordered light Marschal grips in December...
Also, does anyone knows what (if any) is a weight difference between standard and competition hummers?
