Project: IDPA SP01 Shadow...

I'd like to know too !

Nice thread!
I've been thinking of putting my Shadow on IDPA diet and this meal-plan sounds great! Already ordered light Marschal grips in December...
Also, does anyone knows what (if any) is a weight difference between standard and competition hummers?

There is no difference in weight between the competition and standard hammer (at least noticeable difference that could be discerned with a scale used in a match).
The competition hammer is a worthwhile mod in it's own right however.

If you go to idpacanada.ca you will find in the Forum section under Gunsmithing the way to get the Shadow to make weight. To my knowledge you won't get there any other way. The Aluminum grips are to heavy and drilling out the mags won't reduce the weight enough and you will only end up ruining rather expensive mags.

Removing some metal from the frame can be done but you won't remove enough to get the weight down.

Once you have installed the Dennis Marshal grips and thinned and changed the mag brake you will be right on 39oz. Weigh your 10 round mags as some weigh more than others.

If you can drill holes in those Aluminum grips and get their combined weight down to .4oz then you might make 39oz with the mag brake change. You will have to decide if you want to start drilling holes in the grips when you still might not get the weight down enough.

I wish I could be more helpful or offer you another alternative but I can't. More than one has been down this road before with the Shadow.

ps Your Shadow weighs in .05oz less than mine did so you have that going for you.

So it looks to me that if your shadow comes with a steel guide rod you cannot change to plastic?

From the excluded modifications list:

4. Guide rods made of a material different from the factory part
it replaces.

I can see how if your pistol came with plastic they wouldn't want you to make it heavier, but they really care if you trying to make it lighter? I know that this doesn't have to be logical; the rules are the rules, right? Do any of the shadows come with a plastic guide rod?

As far as I know they all do. Mine and everyones I know came with plastic. I changed mine to a metal one though.

Well looks like it's Marschal grips for me (For IDPA at least)...

As the Aluminum grips came in the US Postal shipping box:

Weight on the Aluminum grips : 1.55 oz.

Weight on the Aluminum grips (with griptape) : 1.60 oz.

How thin are they vs. stock Rubber grips ?

***Note: THe trigger reach is WAY WAY closer with the Aluminum grips on, the pistol feels Skinny !

Unfortunately - I either need to drop weight ALL OVER for my own wanton aesthetics just to have those great red grips - or its Marschals (Again - JUST for IDPA. Ipsc is fine - mwuhahha).

Weight of SP01 Shadow with mag & 'Thin' Aluminum -long- grips : 40.40 oz. Over by 1.40 oz.

DEFINATELY looks freaking HAWT with those red Aluminums though...

I will go have a read Bob, see what I find. My inexperienced stubbornness thinks there is another way, all the while in my head I hear my grandfather's voice saying "You can do it your way 15 times wrong, or my way once, your choice." - LOL

Your grandfather was a wise man. Mine used to tell his Grand-son , "Anyone can get lost it just takes a damn fool to stay lost".:D

Here is how my Shadow lost weight:

Original weight - 41.1oz.
Minus the rubber grips (2.3oz) - 38.8oz
Minus the original mag brake (.2oz)- 38.6oz
Plus:
Aluminum mag brake for 75B (.0oz)- 38.6oz
Dennis Marchal Grips (.4oz) - "39oz".

All weights with a 10 round mag inserted in the gun. The aluminum mag brake once thinned did not record a weight on my scale. I tested the scale with my check weights for my RCBS Electronic scale.

Oh man that is ###y with those thin grips. I'm not familiar with IDPA but it I surprised with the production class weight limit. Sounds like its polymer biased. I might just get me a CZ in the near future.

Update:

So I picked up some Marschal maple grips & a smaller ambidextrous safety the other day to further the weightloss...

Here's the grips weight :

SP01 Shadow weight with Marschal grips (and no other changes...) UGH, 0.20 oz over - STILL !:
i-bx2zwNL-M.jpg

For how great this gun shoots - its a big piece of steel.

*Next step.... Smaller safety.

TIme to change the safety to the smaller one...

Here's the smaller safety's weight :
i-5vbnkRR-M.jpg

So with the shadow trigger assembly pulled apart I weigh the original safety...

i-XWrJm3N-M.jpg

WOW, this is gonna be close....

Result weight with the SP01 Shadow wearing Marschal grips & the smaller safety 38.95oz ! OMFG close.

** Now, trigger time at the range to get used to the feel of the Marschal grips (I LOVE the feel of the thin aluminum grips, the Marschals are wider & have a strange wide feel....). :shotgun:

GOOD GRIEF THAT'S CLOSE ! ! ! !

You'll want to make sure it's clean of fouling and doesn't have anything more than the minimum required oil needed for the slides and the lightest possible film on the action for rust prevention and lubrication. It's THAT close ! ! ! !

The grips look like they are flat sided with rather abrupt edge curves. That's likely why they feel odd.

Congrats. You made it. Now the last thing you want to hear is this but for all the shooters out there who love the Shadow and want to save the pain of going through all of the above take a look at the 75 Shadow. It comes without the FLDC , makes SSP weight as is and is every bit as nice a shooting gun as the SP-01 Shadow. I shot the 75 Shadow down in Washington State last year and it is an excellent gun. The downside is I doubt if any have been brought into Canada yet. I am sure you can get hold of the distributor though and plead your case or look into having a retailer import one for you. If you can't stand the wait buy a CZ85 Combat, install the Competition hammer in the gun along with a 13# Mainspring and you will ahve a gun with just as nice a trigger as the Shadow. I can't tell the difference between the trigger pull my Shadow has vs my 85 Combat.

To the OP very nice, enjoy the gun and IDPA.
