Project: Lightest AR build... Suggestions?

Looking to put together a VERY light AR15 for 3 gun matches. One of the guys at the range showed me his and it was a feather compared to mine (eventhough people think mine is pretty light already..) At the moment, im shooting a STAG/Daniel Defense hybrid with lots and lots of magpul. Last time i checked, it weighted around 7.5lbs minus optics.

To start things off..

This build will probably have a 14.5 inch (fluted???) barrel + muzzle break + mid length gas system + geissel trigger (or something equivalent)

From the looks of things, ill probably use a JP VTAC Modular Hand Guard System (or something similar) instead of an alloy quad rail.

I also remember seeing some polymer CAV AR15 lowers but im not sure if they are in Canada yet...

I haven't thought too much about the other parts on the rifle so any suggestions would be great.

Remember light weight is key :)
 
Rick at ATRS has CF hand guards if you want to shave more weight as well. Other then that standard or moe stocks will be lightest of course.
 
Lightweight profile barrel (.625" at the FSB) with carbine gas system. (midlength would mean longer handguards, therefore more weight)

Colt fiberlite CAR stock is the lightest stock, bar none.

Optics can dramatically increase weight. If you don't need magnification something like an Aimpoint Micro or Vortex Sparc (Sparc has a 2x attachment that screws directly in to the optic, doesn't require a seperate mount), of course the lightest option would be to go with iron sights only.

Do you really need a free float tube? Look at the weight of some of those things, especially if you add panels, vert grip, etc... If you do go this route keep a critical eye on the weight. Daniel Defense M4 rails are some of the lightest out there, or look at PRI carbon fiber tubes. The absolute lightest would be Clark carbon fiber tube, have to glue it to the barrel nut though.

If the objective is to get better performance I'd spend the money on ammo and a gym membership rather than another AR.
 
I want a light ar because I can own one haha. It's true I should probably hit the gym but a light rifle is something I've always thought about. If I'm going with carbine length to reduce weight, how long should the barrel be? I remember reading about 14.5 -16 is optimal for mid. What about carbine? 11? 10.5?

Also, who carries the pencil barrels?
 
I would take a lightweight/pencil barreled midlength over a carbine length, purely for the speed gains in the actual shooting/shot recovery.
