Just wondering, will a 5 shots magazine and the bolt action kind of slow you down a bit on the qualifying stages? Thx
You really need a couple 10rd magazines, obviously slower with a bolt action, but at least 2/3 of those who qualified at the one I attended were using bolt actions.
So it's a good challenge that is certainly doable.
As Pauli mentioned, one course of fire has you starting with a partial magazine like 2rds and need to reload during the shoot with another magazine that has 8.
I assume if all you had was 5rd magazines they'd make it work, and you can always ask when you sign up.

Hey ZMa, I'm one of the mapleseed instructors. Regardless of the platform, we always try to get attendees to forget about the score and focus on the lessons. It may take a few events before you achieve the rifleman score so building a good base AND proper practice is key. If you are new to shooting, I would recommend using a semi-auto so you can focus on learning the fundamentals. It is certainly more challenging with a bolt, as most will lose sight picture when they cycle the action and form can break down pretty quickly when time pressure is applied. Changing magazines is required for 50% of the stages so no real advantage of 10 round mags over 2 5 rounders.

I guess it all depends on how familiar you are with your rifle, and how quick you are at getting back into position. I did get my patch using a bolt gun with 5rds magazines... but it would been easier (with a few more points) if I'd been using a semi.
The event is all about shooting positions and how to better use a sling.
Looking forward to do another event, and volunteer to some match!

Have been using the club rifles for a few months now. Mostly Anschutz 1903 Junior with peep sight, tried Savage Mark II with scope a few times. I don't think the club has any semis. Only saw some Handgun section ROs brought their AR-looking .22s to the range.
