Hi all,

Just wanted to share a project that I've been working on. I've got a Mossberg 500 classic 50th anniversary in 12ga and it came with nice walnut stocks, but I wasn't such a fan of the super high gloss finish. I also preferred the looks of old stocks, so I purchased a set of vintage stocks from a fellow CGNer off of EE. Little did I know, the old style stocks only fit a single action bar, and they took a 7 5/8 slide tube. I bought a Hogue forend adapter nut to make my new style tube work, and at the same time, I decided to cut the stock down a little do shorten the length of pull and a Pachmayr old english recoil pad. I cut the stock down about 3/8 inch, making the LOP about 13 5/8 inches.

Original looks. Pretty nice but I wanted something different!

The first challenge was making room for the dual action bar. The forend only had one side cut out; the other side was basically uncut. I used a dremel tool with a sanding drum to carve out a spot for the 2nd action bar.

The next part was making room for the Hogue forend adapter nut. It looked like on the stock, the inner surface of the forend didn't have enough diameter for the nut to thread onto the tube. I again used a dremel tool with a sanding drum to expand the inner diameter. If I were to do it again, I'd try to find a sanding flap wheel, or a drill press with a sanding drum, as I found that using the dremel didn't give super accurate results. The end fitment was OK but I think if I used other tools, the fitment would be a bit tighter and better fitting. As a side note, I broke the original tube as it looks like I over-tightened the nut! Playing skeet, on the last shot, I pumped and felt the threads on the tube give up. Definitely didn't over-tighten the new tube the 2nd time around.

The stock fits onto the receiver just like any other stock would. You've probably seen a recoil pad fitted onto a stock before so there isn't too much to show here. The white spacer was the original one and I'm hoping to replace it with something that fits better. The original has a crack and seemed to shrink when I put it back on. The fitment of that spacer definitely sucks.

End result. I think it has more of a vintage vibe now. I've never seen stocks like this before either! When searching Mossberg 500 stocks with Google, I can't seem to see any others like it. I think I got something somewhat unique!

What do you guys think of this? Any ways I can improve on this?

Also, for a white spacer, I'd like to replace this old one. Any suggestions on where to find materials?
