Project shottie

The14" barrel is much handier in close quarters, in vehicles/aircraft and in thick bush versus an 18.5". The OAL of the 14' Norinco is ony 33". For comparison, my 18.5" Guide Gun is 37" OAL.

With ghost ring sights the 14" is very accurate at practical ranges ie. 0 to 75 yards.

How does the 14" vs. 18.5" barrel compare?

I know the 14" will be much better for close quarters, but what are some of the pros and cons of the different barrel lengths?

I have been wondering the same thing myself. Specifically, I have been wondering about velocity figures. I have the Federal ballistics catalog on my computer but it seems that the products are all tested with 30" barrels. I'm looking to balance size with energy in my next "shottie" :D

Here are the differences in velocities for 14". 16" and 20" barrels. These velocities were chronied by Ike.

Hi all,
Here is the informal shotgun velocity test information:
Ammunition was 2 3/4" Federal Classic 1 oz. (Grey/Blue Box) Slugs.
Test Guns were 20" Mossberg 590, 16" Factory Remington 870, 14" DAC/870 Remington
Velocities:
20" : 1513 fps average
16" : 1413 fps average
14" : 1353 fps average
Velocity loss was 25-30 fps per inch of barrel lost.

My observations...
14" barrels:
Have much greater muzzle flash.
Are super loud.
Would aim best with a red dot/reflex sight.
They are nice to pack around, and use in the thick brush.
Chicks dig them. :D

And based on many old shotgun books I have read where barrels were progressively cut down, and velocities tested...
Buckshot is slightly faster.
Slugs slightly slower.

Add chokes to the barrel to improve pattern.

Thanks for the info.

Going back to the difference between a 500 SP Mossberg and a 590 SP Mosberg, can some one explain this to me. I looked on the web site but did not see any difference, what am I missing?

Look at barrel lenght, mag. capacity, sights, heat shields and stock. There are many models offered in the 500 and the 590.

My favorite is the 590SP item no. 50668 it has:

1- 20 in. barrel (needed to fit #2)
2- 9 shot cap. (no need to buy mag extensions)
3- ghost ring sight (great "combat sight")
4- Speed Feed stock (you can store spare ammo in the stock)

My 2 cents, althought it may be a little over budget for you, but you'd be set. No need to buy after market crap, except maybe a Surefire light...
