well finally project welfare thumper is pretty much done.
well i started this in november having decided i want an accurate long range rifle that looks like a high end tactical rifle, but i want to keep the costs under $1000 all inclusive.
so i started with a stevens 200 in 300 win mag, cleaned the seams and did the first paint while i waited for a scope base.
after ordering a b-square single piece base from Jason Spencer at Gunco, i painted the stock in royal blue and redish metalics as shown below,
gun003-1.jpg

when i put it back to gether it didnt look like i was hoping So......
after surfing the net for ideas on either to replace the stock or modify it to look more "tacticool" i stumbled a thread started here by "Magnum Peanut" about his stevens 200 stock modification and decided to "borrow" some of his ideas. so off to CT i went in search of bondo and spot putty and sand paper.

i Decided to skip on the grip and but stock work as it would be to time consuming and concentrated on the foregrip. i widened it and squared it off.
it turned out almost identical to his, which is what i was after. at this point the base had arrivved and i proceded to install it. next challenge the glass, now keep in mind my goal is to keep the entire cost of this project start to finish under $1,000, so high end glass was not an option. having mulled over the options i decided on a tasco target/varmint 6-24X40 with a 30/30 reticle *i wanted the mildot but noone had any and i was looking at 3-6 weeks delivery time*. now how am i going to stick this puppy on. keeping in mind i want this for longrange/tactical type shooting and i didnt go with the $100 canted base option it left me needing rings that can be used to cant the scope, now theres only one type of rings i know of that can do that, burris sig zee rings with off set inserts. well lebarons didnt have any with the off set inserts *like that is surprising* so i got the regular inserts and have sent ### international a PM from here about aquireing a set of off set inserts through them * gotta support dealers that have a reputation for quality and great customer satisfaction right*. so now i decided it needs a cool look as the former blue and redish theme just doesnt cut it for this look. off to walmart we go.

upon arriving at the paint section and perusing the variuous co9lors available i notice this one that really catches my eye "speckle stone granite effects" by Excel. upon closer examination it has a nice textured feel to it and gives the look of cinder block or cement. coooooooolllll. so i pick up a can and the clear top coat for it and off i go.

back at the bat cave err workshop i start setting up and preping for paint.
aftyer applying the primer, i primed a piece of scrtap and tested the speckle stone just to see what effect it gives. i learn that your base color determines the "look" it gives soooo i start going through my spray paints looking for the right base color, this ones to dark , this ones to loud etc etc.
so i settled on a krylon camo Olive good enough and if it shows through it wont look that bad.
now we start the ppaint process, first day i laid the primer down and rechecked the surface for inmperfections. day two the camo paint goes on and again recheck for flaws. day three the speckle stone goes on, now apparently this is an epoxy based paint and i am supposed to allow extra setting time, so i will give it an extra day. day five speckle stone clear coat goes on.
so where at day seven today and i put it all back together, man shes a purdy rifle.

now given i am not in the military and dotn do any military shooting i figure that the cement/stone look instead of the woods/field camo was better fitting.
now i still have to put a pad on it and decide wether or not i will brake it but for the most part she is ready to test fire.
i'll post some pics up as soon as i find some fresh batterys for my camera, damn kids toys eat them up like candy

Project welfare thumper costs
-stevens 200 300 winmag: $404 with taxes
-tasco scope and burris signature zee rings: $162 with taxes
-bondo sand paper and spot putty: $28 with taxes
-primer, speckle stone paint, speckle stone clear coat: $23 with taxes
-b-Sqaure base $10 with taxes
total so far $627 with taxes
with about 15 hours of time invested in it
i still have to get the offset inserts and pad but the cost of both will be under $100.
so i should have just under $300 to play with incase i decide to go with a brake and get it re-crowned

Jeez, SIGNGUY, most people get their trophies mounted. Why are you leaving yours just thrown into a box. Sorry, couldn't resist!

Beautiful job on the stock. It does look "tacticool" in the pics. The Tasco is no slouch for the money. I have the same one on my Savage 12 and it really delivers for the cash output. Nice work!

i am going to be buying a choate ultimate stock for it this spring and will be getting a barrel swap to a heavier barrel in the fall. but i figure this is an excellent budget build and hopefully i'll get a chance soon to confirm its acuuracy abilitys. defintly a great project for the entry level or poor student/other

I think I'ld invest in better optics before spending those bucks on stock and barrel replacement. Wonder how many rounds before that scope is done? Gun looks real good though! Much better than the first paint job IMHO.....

Nice looking stock, and great rifle overall

I agree with guys on better scope
the funds that you have left should put another $200 towards a better scope :D

ps. I might have choate stock from 10fp for sale ;)
