prone shooting a 458win?

I've you've read any of my previous posts 'Boo, you would know the answer to your question. If you have read them and you still don't know, then I'm afraid you're too far lost.

I have never shoot prone, the Gibbs 505. I don't think that I will ever want to do that!!

If necessary I will get closer or the Grizz will get closer to me!!

You are right; I am just too old I guess.

I also can't figure out why someone would wish to slam meth or smoke crack cocaine either.

Some people just seem to like abusing their bodies against advise of others even when they are the one asking for that advise in the first place.

What's the big deal about trying to improve ones skills in shooting the guns that they own? How is this anything like being on crack? Maybe you're on crack for thinking that these 2 things are similar  Besides, if you actually did read anything, you would see from my first post that I was wanting to try this because I was told that it would be a similar experience to bench shooting this gun which I plan on doing when I go to Montreal.

When I get to the Selous (very soon now) I'm going to try shooting the .500 Nitro prone. Of course a 13 pound .500 Nitro double isn't a 10 pound .505 bolt gun! I'll pester Mark Sullivan until he let's me try the .600, but I have no plans it shooting it or a .577 prone!

If you want something similar to bench shooting before your trip to Montreal why not rest it over the hood of a truck or the roof of a car. It's much closer to a bench position and won't beat on you so much.

Muzzle blast will do wonders for the paint work!!:D :D

Jeremy, to be honest I think the 458 is a little too much for prone shooting, at least with full power loads. Prone is way,way worse the from the bench. Start with some reduced loads if you feel you need to let her go prone. I find the 340 WBY about max prone. Anything in 458 range should be easy from seated, elbows on knees.

I have a BRNO 602 in .458 Win Mag. Standing shots with it are not that bad, not much different than shooting my Browning BPS 10 gauge at geese. But on the bench the .458 WILL get your attention and although I have never shot it prone I would imagine that it would be worse than shooting off the bench. I don't really care to shoot much more than about 5 or 6 rounds off the bench with it.:)

My Interarms .458 with a synthetic stock weighed 7.5 lbs. 3 shots rapid fire with HOT handloads dislocated my shoulder and caused my spine to go into a very nice s shape. I also suffered at the same time from my own stupidity 3 discs were driven to the right and 3 vertebrae were driven to the left.
I crawled into the house and crawled into the chiropractors office the same day to have everything put back in place. He thought i was in a sledding accident as it was winter at the time.
In a true prone position the rifle will not be situated in your shoulder correctly and your collar bone is gonna take such a hard hit that i wouldnt want to be the person doing it.
If you feel the need to do it i would work my way up as others have suggested or work up in calibres. My max was a 340wby on a deer at 250 yards...try the same, find some one with a 300 win mag then a 340 then a 375hh and so on.If at any time you have discomfort STOP as your next shot will probably cause you lots of grief.
To go full prone with a .458 is nuts if you dont know whats gonna happen to you.Besides if you went prone with a .458 and just winged a elephant..he will stomp you into a little pool of goo before you have the chance to get up and run:rolleyes:
Just my .02 cents worth but i have been shooting bigbores lots for the last 20 years and i wouldnt even want to try this out.....

The actual pain didnt start till shortly after. It was a real good jolt and it was3 shots fast....then after i realized that something wasnt quite right!!!!

Oh come on now MTM...nothing has ever been quite right right with me b4 i start anything... ...Muhahahahaaaa....hey do you see the spirit hovering over your head??? I think its waving to me..:D
