Pronghorns...Such A Strange But Wonderful Little Animal!

I've hunted and killed 8 bucks and one doe to date. They are a very interesting animal, and most fun to hunt. Needless to say, they are my favorite to eat............sweet and tender! My most recent buck was last year, 2021, he tasted just as good as the others.

We used to hunt them in south eastern Alberta, challenging to hunt but great eats! Back then we never had range finders and it's not easy estimating distances out there and the flat ground with no cover can make it difficult to get close.

Many years ago I was driving along a back road in Montana and topped a small hill to find probably 150 Antelope standing on the road. I hammered the brakes but it was too late to stop completely, somehow they all stepped aside and I charged through the middle of the herd and never hit a single one!

They are really interesting animals and one of my favorite hunts. When they hit the throttle, man they can go fast and cover some distance.... fastest land animal in North America!

Supposedly back in the day a good "Buffalo Horse" could overtake them in 8-10 miles.

One of Teddy Roosevelt's books has an interesting description of the antics of antelope. They are an odd animal, for sure. One old antelope hunter told me the trick to good meat is to get the hide off as soon as possible. A good old friend of mine brought a rear 1/4 to us one day. Next day, we cooked it slowly in the oven, then called him over for supper. Can't say that I've ever tasted better meat, tame or wild. So very tender.

Hands down my favourite animal.

Hunted them a few times and going back this fall after a two year break due to COVID. I've been lucky enough to harvest 4 goats!

I had the same experience 30 yrs ago on a highway between Hanna & Brooks Ab. I was driving a liner load of cows to Brooks hamburger butchers and about 3 am i popped over a rise and 30 or 40 "goats" all over the road...I stood on the brake pedal, spiked the trailer brake handle and threw all 3 jake heads in on single moment ...those little buggers split like the red sea and I never touched a one. And then spent a hour climbing around in the trailer in the dark, making sure no cows went down when I threw the anchor

Very nice goat! Did you tape him out of curiosity?

Yes, he officially gross scores 83 6/8 and netted 82 2/8. He officially makes the Boone and Crockett record book. The Art of Taxidermy, out of Lethbridge will be mounting the head, however it's a 2 year wait. Antelope hunting is like no other, to say the least, it is a lot of fun. I have great respect for these little critters, they are kind of comical in their ways, especially during the rut. Their meat is the best!!!

Beautiful animals and very good eating, up there with caribou. Hunted them in southern eastern Alberta and at longer distance the strong winds down there can affect the lighter 25-06 bullets, well that was my excuse anyways.
