I am new to handguns and have a keen interest in revolvers.
While looking around Ellwood Epps gunstore in Orillia I saw a revolver on display where the frame had ruptured due to using improper bullets.

I did not have the sense to ask about it at the time and it has been on my mind ever since. I believe it said the damage was caused by using Wad Cutters instead of Round Nose or visa versa.

I have a number of S&W revolvers in .22, .38, .357 and .44. Do I have to stay away from any particular bullet types.

If this is a problem does it apply to semi automatic pistols also.

Thanks for your help,

Maybe it was a .357mag that someone shot thousands of .38 specials through without cleaning the cylinder and then decided to try a .357 mag...

I doubt it was the shape of the bullet.

Bullet shape/type would have nothing to do with the damage.
Wrong ammo type..i.e. using .357Mag round in a revolver rated for .38Special,
a round with the incorrect (too much) powder charge, the situation suggested by Can-down....could have been any of these....

It would not have been as simple as the wrong bullet shape.
For example a 38 Wadcutter is safe in a 38 special. Just as safe as a round nose or a semi wadcutter.

The gun you saw could have been many reasons. As already said, a reload with a double charge of powder, or the wrong powder.
Or maybe 38 ++ in old old gun.

A few years ago, someone beside me asked me to check his ammo as he felt it was rather strong recoil.
He had a 38 revolver. He had gone into a gun store & asked for a box of 38's.
What he was given was a box of 38 Supers. Surprisingly they fit in the chamber & fired .
