I've read this on http://www.snipercountry.com/InReviews/IOR_3x25_QR-TS.asp , a review of the IOR 3x25 QR-TS...

"The only CORRECT way to fire an AR15/M16 is with the tip of your nose just touching the charging handle. Many civilians are unaware of this and often place their heads too far back on the stock. Improper head placement is often the cause of perceived poor performance on optical devices and on wandering zeros. The QR-TS allows a generous amount of room to move, but if you set the scope up properly, so that you are at the optimum eye relief as you nose touches the charging handle, you will find you have plenty of room to move without the image darkening."

I don't recall my nose touching the carry handle when shooting.
I normally position the ELCAN with one rail slot exposed at the rear.
What do you guys think of this ?

I think it helps with consistancy if you can just touch the cocking handle with your nose,, or your nose to something. At least you know that you are always putting your head into the same position. That may help eliminate or minimize wandering zeros, but there are other ways to ensure you head and cheek and were they should be besides doing a nose check. It will also only apply for one type of position,, like the prone. Going to kneeling means your head just won't be able to adopt the same alignment/positon as prone,, so even though you may be able to get your nose to the handle in prone,, doesn't mean it will be there in sitting, etc.

As for it being the "only CORRECT" way,, that is just not true. With the fixed carry handle sight,, having your nose close to the cocking hand should give you about the correct eye relief. With an optic,, you can play with eye relief a little more because the optic is not fixed like the carry handle sight.

I have seen some guys with some very long noses,, and some with a button nose,,

when I am shooting with ACOG and aimpoint on a collapsable, I have learnt the habbit of putting my nose on the charging handle for consistency. And since I the stock is only extended to the second position, this allows me to hug the gun much better and keep everything tight to the body.

I am 5'8" so I simply cannot do that with the Elcan on the standard A2 stock. But I think it is more important to practice the stance to get into that consistancy whether it is live fire at the range or dry fire at home.

I have a collapsable 6 position stock on mine, so i could try to change the stock's lenght according to the different shooting position changes (and remember the different settings for prone, sitting, kneeling, etc...) so that my nose would always come in contact with the carry handle.

I guess that in some matches were you have to change positions quickly, there's simply no time to loose on doing this, but in slower (deliberate-type) shooting, it could be done.

I'll tape a patch or chunk of electrician's tape to the buttstock. This tape will landmark a position for my right (right handed shooter) to contact. Lots and lots of practice will help locate this cheek contact point.

Use what works for you !

I have the a2 configuration with a scope. I took a cheek piece off a lee enfield target rifle and glued it on to the stock , and the scope is mounted to the rear . The charging handle is just short of the cheek piece. Now i need a short length of pull so this works very good for me.
