loading the clip itself or getting ammo into the rfle?
I find that pressing as close to the base of the cartridge is the most sur-fire way to do it. Also I find sometimes I have to wiglle the charger itslef to get it 'just right'

If you're talking about where the bases of the cases go, it should look something like this:sgt.maj said:

When the rounds are sequenced this way in the charger, it should prevent feeding jams and make it easier to push the rounds into the mag.

Does anyone actually knock the charger away with the closing of the bolt? I've never had any luck like that, have to pull it out before closing. Am I just not doing it hard enough, or has the Jay Currah just seen too many war movies?
Can't say I've ever had that problem. On both my No.1 and No.5 the clips just flop out when I close the bolt. As for loading the chargers in said manner, _-_-_, when I do that I get jams on the first and sixth round. So that's no good for me.ollie said:
From my personal new milsurp guys experience. I loaded the chargers as recommended but always had trouble with the FIRST round getting the rim stuck behind the second round.
My solution is simple, regardless of which way I load the chargers. When I load the mag, once I've pushed the rounds down I SLIDE the top round forward (so the rim is infront of second round) then I let the rounds come back up.

The reason for this is the top round would slide forward normally if one employed the final step...ie load from chargers, and push bolt forward, which ejects the charger.

Having just read the above last week I tried it in my P-14, and it works great, and I don't have to push the top round forward, but mind you I often don't do this as them little chargers now cost money, and I'd hate to loose some.

I tried all the different methods last night and with the staggered set up;
_-_-_ , I could not get it to load without the first rim being behind the second rim. When I tried "laddering" them, with all rims behind the last, it seemed to work better. I have read that it should be staggered and I'm wondering why im having so much trouble with that set up.

the sequence of rounds shown is correct and this is the ONLY sequence that works properly. It works fine for ANY .303 rifle, including SMLE, Number 4 and 5, P-'14 and Ross.
Pressing the thumb as close as possible to the base of the rounds definitely improves feeding.
If you have a Dremel tool, you can slick up the insides of the feed lips of many clips (there are a lot of bad ones; they were made to be used once) and improve your loading that way. If you get a few good clips, hold onto them. You can actually reload a magazine MUCH faster with the chargers than you can change magazines. It is not necessary to remove the charger from the charger guide: just slap the bolt forward and it flies off.
(Don't do that with those nice-feeding Mark II clips from World War One: they are just too slick to mistreat!)
