OK, stupid question of the day, but is it propper to hunker down with a rifle style cheekweld when shooting a short barrelled shotgun at paper targets?

If it's just going to abuse my face, bashing it off the stock, I'm happy to take advice from the masters.

It took me 36 years to get this pretty. Hate to ruin it for no good reason.

Why do you think it would it bash your face anymore than say a .30-06 would(it doesn't)? Nothing wrong with a good cheek weld on a shotgun. You'll be ok.

Better to cheek weld than to have the stock kiss you. You should keep your head down, this is why the fit of a shotgun is important.

I notice the trap and skeet guys shooting heads up. I just wondered if shooting static targets was better suited with a rifle type shoulder and cheekweld, or heads up.

HOWDY; The cheek should be firm beside the stock. Some people have a idea to tilt there head over to the right on top of the stock , to see the bead,,this is where you get mule kicked.
The recoiling shot gun should be able to slip up the side of your face , not slam into your cheek bone.
Try some dry fireing and move the shot gun as if in recoil .
