Proper speed for ballistic tips?

I worked out a load for my .223 using 40 gr Vmax with 27 gr of h335. On groundhogs I typically only get an entry hole where the bullet went in and nothing comes out the other side. The groundhog's never move and are instantly dead. I worked out a load for my .243 using 55gr nosler ballistic tips and 50 gr of h414. I've noticed with it, that usually the bullet blows a 2 inch dia. hole out the other side and in some cases I have seen a mark in the dirt beyond where the bullet then exploded and ripped up a 3 inch wide swath of dirt. Do you think the .243 load is too fast or does the hornady blow up better than the nosler. The reason for the question is that I am going to work up a load fro my 22-250 and am debating which bullet weight and manufacturer I will use.

My vote for the 22-250 is 50grain V-Max bullets. Absolutely explosive on ground pigs.

I have used them in the .223 as well and the results are usually bang flop. No explosive reaction, maybe not enough FPS out of the .223 case.

The higher the velocity, the more rapid the expansion, the less the penetration.Reducing the velocity of the .243 will only reduce the expansion and the damage done by the bullet, and it will increase the odds of the bullets exiting.A 55gr .243 bullet will usually penetrate more than a 40gr .223 bullet if both bullets are of similar design, with similar velocities.

Thanks for the vote on 50 gr vmax's. I actuallty just picked up 200 of them this aft. at $25/100. Components are getting expensive. What powder are you using and how much?

I was using H4895 (33.5-36.5 grns), Varget (35-37.5 grns) and Benchmark (33.5-36 grns) in my 22-250.

The .243 55 gr S'Tips seem to do that on coyotes. Not frangible enough if you want the hides. We've run them from 3600 all the way past the 4050 mark and they always make a big exit. On the plus side, the 'yote never moves. Bang, splat. The 75 gr Barnes bonded solids solve that - or the Varminator if you can find them. We like the 55 S'Tip because of the speed - especially with H4895.

:agree:
That's funny....thought the whole idea was to make as big a splat a possible.
