I have seen no5 rifles with both the wasp waisted trigger guards and the "normal" looking ones. Which is proper or was it a hit and miss whatever was on hand type of situation?

The correct trigger guard is the one that was on when it left the factory - which means later war (and early postwar), British, BSA or Fazackerly.

Edited:

From Stratton, Vol 2 "No.4 and No.5 Rifles" North Cape Publications, pages 48-49, the correct type is so-called Third Variation, milled wasp-waist trigger guard.

I believe that both are correct. Late production (especially those made after production officially stopped) were assembled from parts on hand. During regular production, post war I don't think that there was much thought given to it, and they used what was on hand. Early production (late war) it was probably taken more seriously, as most things were.
