protecting interest when buying/selling

I like to complete the transfer before money changes hands. That way you know the gun exists, your name is on it and the previous owner is actually in possession of it. This way everyone has their hands in the pot and then the monetary side can be carried out before shipping.

Hey look the registry actually helps us buy and sell guns HAHAHAHAHAHA

you could also ask the seller for an inspection period (3 days or whatever) to make sure its what you want, some accomidate, some dont. if you send it back, you'll lose your shipping, but no be stuck to resell something you didnt like.

Trust your gut feeling. If it tells you something is not right, it usually is not. Walk away.

As a buyer I ask for an inspection period and only deal with people who have a good seller rating.

As a seller I won't start a transfer before the gun is paid for.

+1. Try walking into a gun store and saying, "Transfer this gun into my name, I'll be back in a week to pay for it." From a seller's perspective you know the buyer means business when you see $$$, from a buyer's perspective, deal with people with good trader ratings who have been members for a while. I have bought guns from people with 0 or low ratings and everything went smoothly though.

im sure seller wants to confirm the money's there prior to transfer just has much as the buyer wants to know the guns there before handing over the money. CFC would be a good resourse for confirming both partys paperwork and intent. some sellers have no trading history. you just never know in this game .

It seems the standard is to pay first, then transfer. If you can't trust the other party and/or can't afford to lose the money, don't do business. Once you make the transfer, I don't believe there is any recourse for you - the firearm no longer belongs to you.

I suppose you could, as the buyer, initiate a transfer with the seller, then send the money - the CFC could tell you whether the certificate number, firearm and licenced seller actually existed and issue you a reference number. Then buyer would send funds. On receipt of funds, the seller would then complete the transfer and ship the firearm. That wouldn't be too unreasonable - what do you want to buy from me? :D

Even after I complete a transfer, I still have a legal document showing that the firearm was previously registered to me. I think that if the deal went sideways at this point, I would still have legal recourse.

I don't worry about any of this in most cases. But when the item in question is 2k+, I don't like to just pay for it without some tie to it first.

thanks for input,im sure seller wants to confirm the money's there prior to transfer just has much as the buyer wants to know the guns there before handing over the money. $3000 to $4000 is alot to part with.Im thinking CFC would be a good resourse for confirming both partys paperwork and intent. some sellers have no trading history. you just never know in this bussiness .

I think the most I've done has sold almost $2K to someone... I have a good rating so no problem.

If I were to buy something from someone for $4K I'd probably spend the extra bit and fly out there to inspect it first ;)

I've bought and sold many items for over $2K on the board.

My rule of thumb, as buyer or seller, is no transfer until the gun is paid for. Pics, and good communication are a must for either party.

My last buyer had me write him a note with the current date and send him a pic with the firearm and note in it. Worked just fine.

Good advice. Whenever I buy something I ask for pics, lots of them. If I don't see what I'm looking for, than I'll ask them to take a picture of a marking or something that isn't clear or is missing in the original photos. Most people are happy to accomodate you. Stear clear of people who are too vague or evasive in their answers.

I don't think anyone would transfer a firearm to someone without receiving payment first. That would be stupid.
Maybe if the parties involved have been on here a few years with a few thousand posts and trader ratings above 50....I could see it.

Would you give your car to someone and say send me the money later??

I'll do a non-restricted transfer two ways:

1) Transfer the gun first and then ship once the funds are received. This is the preferred option because then I know the buyer is legal.

2) Send the gun upon receipt of a PAL# for inspection purposes. If the buyer wants it then I will initiate the transfer upon receipt of funds.

Oh and I want your name, address and phone number and I'll feel much better if they can be confirmed on Canada 411.

There are three elements in the deal. The transfer, the funds and the gun. As long as one person doesn't have all three at the same time there is protection for both sides.

There is no way I'm going to transfer money to someone without having either the gun or the transfer completed. If I miss a deal as a result I'll live with it.

I have about 50+ transactions (many even before trader ratings were inc) and I have found that if you ask the right questions/speak to the other party prior to the trade/sale you have little to worry about. I am currently in a trade with another CGN'r for about 1.5 K and I am confident that I will be happy with the deal. Every transaction I have had buying or selling money was sent first, transfer second, and shipping last. As long as you are careful (get an address prior to transaction and confirming details you won't get screwed).
