Howdy folks!

So after a great Christmas holiday, I decided it was about time to get myself a Christmas gift. I've been looking at the Marlin 1895 for a long time, but after hearing all the negative reports on them since the Remington take over, I was a little worried to buy one.

Knowing some of the issues they were having, I was sure to look it over thoroughly before I bought it.

I have to say, I was a little upset with Cabelas as they had the action locked closed and wouldn't take it off so I could cycle it and have a closer look at the internals. They said it was a store policy for safety reasons.

After looking it over as best I could, I decided to take the plunge and try it out. And so far, I am very happy with it!

I absolutely love the wood on this rifle. The colour, the grain, and the finish is perfect! The metal work all looks pretty good, and the blueing is nice and deep. Having never owned a Marlin before, I think the action cycles very smooth. Still not as smooth as my Win 94 and Win 88 (Win 88s are a wicked slick action), but it cycles well, and have heard that they usually have to wear in a bit.

The only minor issues, is just some very slight fit and finish issue around the tang and butt-stock area and some milling marks of the slot cut into the bolt for the lever. The one side doesn't fit as tight to the metal as the other side, but to me, this is a very minor detail. The milling marks don't appear to affect the action at all.

Once I get a chance, I will get a range report put together and post it up!

Please excuse some of the poor pictures, I'm nowhere near close to being a good photographer! Hopefully they don't offend the eyes too badly!

Have fun with it! I'm leanin pretty hard towards pickin up a Marlin Lever Action right now... Lookin for an older one, but looks like Remlin has somewhat tightened up their act... Those flaws are VERY minor compared to what I've seen...

Nice find, I like that stock. I recently got a 336BL and other than the odd tooling marks here and there on the internals it's more than acceptable. Clean screw heads, straight sights and good fit/finish. Like stated, much better than previous models. I looked over a bunch and passed on a lot of them waiting to find "the one" but my wife suprised me with the 336 for Christmas and she picked a good one. I still check them out whenever I come across them and the ones I've seen lately have looked good.

Yeah, I have to say I was quite impressed with this one after hearing all the horror stories! Couldn't be any happier really, especially with the price I paid. It wasn't long ago that these rifles had a sticker price of a couple hundred dollars more. I'm contemplating putting a Williams peep sight on it and removing the buckhorns. I've always liked how fast peeps were to get a sight picture with and feel it would be a good pairing with this rifle to beat the bush with.

Taxes in I paid just under $800 and that was almost 10 years ago. I have the williams peep on mine and love it. I got the one that is attached via the 2 rear scope mount holes as drilling the recever would have made me cry

Nice rifle! Now you just need to trick it out with a large loop-lever, spring kit, Grizzly extractor and trigger... did that with my 1895GBL (plus a set of XS Ghost Rings)- makes for a sweet gun!

I've been looking to get the XS sights and rail like the ones on the 1895SBL. Can't find a place in Canada to get them.. I'd consider other sights but I don't want the dovetail for the rear sight left open when I take it off I think it will look terrible. One reason I want to go with the XS rail as it uses the rear sight dovetail to mount. Unless someone has any other options?

I got my parts, sights included, from Brownells; here h t tp://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/sights/sight-sets/drc-winged-1895-ghost-ring-sight-set-prod26063.aspx
and to fill that dovetail slot, I used this: h t tp://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/sights/sight-parts/front-sight-blanks/decorative-slot-blank-prod20734.aspx

That decorative slot blank is going to get my initials engraved, then maybe filled with some gold leaf. There are other ones on the site that are more rounded, but I went with that one. Both those are in stock, there is a bit of extra paperwork to do because the sights are over $100; you could just keep an eye on them and wait for a sale to bring it under $100 (what I did) and then it's easy-peasy. If you don't want to wait, the paperwork to import it isn't hard to fill out and Brownells is excellent at helping you along. You can get the rail from them also, but I find it ruins the lines of the gun and looks like a bastardized tactifudd gun. But whatever blows your hair back, as they say.
