PRS Match CDTSA Milo Range

That is very generous of you. I will talk to the club and see. I know some of the other disciplines are looking for one as well. I will talk to everyone and let you know.

Thanks again!!

You do not have to be a member at the club to shoot. The club does want a mix on members/non-members.

No problem at all. As long as my life/work schedule will allow it I hope to take part in this, sounds like a lot of fun.

Ryan,

Confirm with standard format, but for past events non-members pay a bit more for insurance, etc. Costs are generally very reasonable either way. (10/20$ for 3G I believe)

I will try to answer as many questions as possible with my post here. Please let me know if I have missed anything.

The fees will follow the standard format with non-members paying $10 more for the guest pass. The use of the guest pass covers the insurance and stuff like that.

The first event will not have a huge number of competitors - I am thinking around 20-30. I am trying to set up the COF so multiple stages can be held at one time by different squads so we can have an efficient match with a decent number of competitors. I do not know when registration will begin.

It should be noted that the CDTSA is a volunteer run organization and competitors have to be involved in helping with the match. I don't mean lots of work but in each squad someone will have to be the safety guy and others will have to be spotters for hits. I don't think it will be too bad in the amount of work. I will also need some people to bring spotting scopes (I don't have one, let alone three...). Once I get farther down the road I will put together a match booklet and there will obviously have to be a safety brief before the match.

For those that are interested here is a preliminary COF (subject to change). Some of the stages have clever names because I think I am funny. I am also trying to think of a couple more stages to bring the round count a bit higher.

1) Speed dots - 50M dash to firing line, drop down to prone, 5 rounds at 100M, 5 rounds at 200M. The targets will be small F-class targets with scoring rings. 150 second time cap.
2) PRS tie breaker #2 - All at 400M line, with 10" gong. 90 second time cap.
3) Saving Private Ryan - 2 rounds at 300M target off of lowest section of barricade, run 10M to the right, fire 2 rounds off of tire at 400M target, drag tire back behind barricade, fire 2 rounds support side prone at 500M. 3 minute time cap.
4) Roof top - fire 3 rounds off back side of roof top at 400M target, transition over the top of the roof, fire 3 rounds at front side of target at 300M. 150 second time cap.
5) Mail slot - shooters will lie on their right or left side and shoot through a 2" tall and 6" wide slot. Shooters choose the distance they want to engage, 5 points for 300M, 4 points for 200M, 3 points for 100M. - 5 rounds. 90 second cap.
6) Offhand/kneeling - 4 rounds at 100M standing off hand, 4 rounds sitting/kneeling at 200M at scored IPSC targets. 2 minute time cap.
7) Saw horses - Shoot 2 rounds prone at 500M, transition to shooting off of the first saw horse, shoot 2 rounds at 400M, transition to sitting on first saw horse (feet can't touch the ground) shooting off of the top saw horse and shoot 2 rounds at 300M target. 150 second time cap.
8) Running of the gongs - 2 rounds at 300M, 2 rounds at 400M, 2 rounds at 500M, 2 rounds at 400M, 2 rounds at 300M. 2 minute time cap.

If anyone has suggestions please let me know. I want this event to be a success. I do not want it to be so challenging that newcomers walk away with a zero on their score card. I also want it to be challenging enough for those who have done this before.

Few notes:

- If using sound actuated timers as done with speed challenges and most sporting events, they don't work well if shooters are close to each other. Multiple squads can be problematic if the distance between shooters is close enough to affect the other squads timer.
- Check club rules, but I heard that events must keep one rifle range open at all times. Now they may consider Sheppard a rifle range, but I think the thought of two ranges at Milo would be one must remain open to non-competing members.

I have another idea but I'll PM as it might be a surprise to some. Subject to clubs approval of course.

I'd prefer COF be left off the list, at least a portion of it. That's the beauty of PRS. It's up to the match director to add surprises, their own COF, and rules. COF is not mandatory to give out to shooters prior to the stage shoot. 3G is blown away by those who dissect it, look for shortcuts, etc. Top finishers rarely just run it. They have a game plan already nailed down days prior to the event: where they reload, where they shoot and from what positions, etc. This doesn't boil down to good standings, but some perform their scheduled plans a lot better then others. PRS has the ability to surprise and be more of a thinking game. Unknown distances, wind calls, dialing on the fly, etc.

Don't you worry Shibby. At the schedule meeting the range thing was covered. Range 1 will remain open at all times. The shorter distances will be achieved by moving the firing line forward. The 3gun guys have a similar plan for some of their stuff.

Thanks for the tip about the timing devices. I was planning old school with stop watches as I have no clue about shot timers.

And that's fine, but some won't accept scores or be quick to blame operators. RO's need to have thick skin. Sad, but true. Some take these things way too serious. Often by those who have little involvement in setting up or taking down.

The club has a timer or two, as well as some members with RO experience who might be kind enough to borrow/man them. Not sure of distance required for rifles but I imagine it would have to be quite a bit. Only used them for 223 and pistols. 20-30 feet was not enough. I suspect they could not be used on the one range together at the same time which would mean only manual timers possible.

Depending on turn-out, running multiple squads at once is a good idea. People sitting around tend to be hard to manage. Managing of people shouldn't be a problem but it is.

Turnout might be pretty good because of requirements. Many don't shoot 3G because of the gear required. We see 21-26 people for that. Largest being Lethbridge with about or just shy of 50. (in 7-8 stages at once). David (GreenIce) on here would be a great person to talk to about matches, managing people, etc. He runs a pretty smooth operation and constantly on top of things. He also wants to see sporting shoots excel in Alberta and was talking about joining forces with MH, Calgary, and Lethbridge to organize and put on events.

Event sponsorship is also an idea. Lethbridge/David, once again, is awesome at it with a major sponsor on each stage of the event. I have bumped into a store or two where the owners were possibly interested when more details could be announced. It was just casual conversation when I was in buying some product.

Not just because I suck, but prizes should not just be handed to top finishers. The competitive shooters clean up, but the rest are kinda left high and dry. I've learnt that at RMR&G benchrest shoot, where raffles were held. Not an easy solution but raffles are nice to ensure everybody has a chance if there were ever awards/prizes, etc.

I am not sure about the event sponsorship rules for the club at this time. I have asked and am currently waiting for a response. It would be great if some of the precision rifle shops from around town were able to make it out there. If I get a go ahead for it I do think it would be a combo of finishers and a raffle style thing.

I just mostly hope to put on a fun event, get people off of their bellies and into alternate shooting positions. It should be an easy event for all those guys who shoot sub-moa all day long...

Hahaha, the Serbu may be a bit much lol.

I would do it with my .338 though, I'd probably suck the first time out, but I'd love to try it and learn PRS, never shot one before.

How do I put my name in?

I dont think they are taking registration yet. But when they do I really hope its Electronic...

I shot my first Precision rifle match in October with about 4-5 outings with my bolt action beforehand. Should be great time/experience either way.
If I do show up I'm planning on making a weekend out of it, saturday this then sunday the LONGEST MILE!

Tagged for interest.

Are you planning on following PRS closely with the rules, divisions, etc. or something that loosely approaches it in scope?
