I'm just going to put this out there, if you haven't been to one or have been on the fence, do it! I just competed in my first one down in WA State (an NWPRL match) and it was just stupidly fun. Super nice, helpful, awesome guys, incredibly fun shooting experience, I'm hooked. Not to mention absolutely the fastest way to improve your skills/learn. Shooting prone is fun but shooting from improvised positions, well it's even more fun! I know there's not much on offer in that style of shoot North of the border, but say if you live in BC, there are shoots at least once a month down in Washington. Rant over :p
 
Yup. Its super addicting.

The area below BC is probably the most active area in the US for this type of match. You have far more opportunities right below you than most people living in the US have.
 
Yep Washington has quite a few matches going on. Next big one in nwprl is Sept 10 tactical supply is putting one on out to 1030yard.

There's also a club level match every first Saturday of the month about 3 hrs south from border.

I'd advise anyone trying to cross the border to have the original form6nia (the one they stamped). As their pdf they send is not an original and CBP may turn you around. Happened to us this last weekend, was going to go to same match but got sent in and turned back. Due to pdf ATF forms.
 
First I've ever heard of that. All of my Form6NIA get e-mailed to me after having been faxed to them and they have never asked for an original. Last time I did the Form6 snail mail routine was back in 2006...
 
I heard you guys didn't make it over cause someone who was a US citizen had a Form 6NIA (as in Non Immigrant Alien) instead of whatever Form 6 a US citizen bringing Canadian firearms into the States needed, no?

My Form 6NIA (as well as my buddy I went with) is a printed version of the pdf they sent me...

I signed up for the Tac-Supply match this morning and scouted out a spot that I can hang targets out to 875 this afternoon. 1030 is kind gonna be pissing in the wind with my .308 though, given that my load goes trans around 820 yards and subsonic at 1000...
 
That was part of it. But the US has crossed twice before with same form. The other guy in car hadn't ever crossed hence being sent inside. Had I gone alone never would have been sent in. They told the other guy that he needs an original before crossing again. Maybe colour of his skin had something to do with it?
 
I kinda found out they are not my cup of tea, but do suggest people try them as they are a great challenge and seems to involve a great group of people.

You must be shooting slow 155's?? A 308 should have no issues at 1000-1200y. Maybe not the easiest caliber, but still can easily do those distances and be accurate with a good operator. If conditions are favourable, constant hits on 1MOA should be possible and not caliber limited. Thing is conditions are rarely favourable. =)

Can you please clarify who turned u around the CBSA Canadian Border or the US Border agents. The Form6nia is not a Canadian form and has nothing to do with Canada. IF the US guy turned you around that is something different.

I have never been turned around but I have had my car searched and all my gear checked...Detroit crossing. turns out they just wanted to see our stuff.
Canadian guys wanted our PAL.

CBP is customs and border protection so USA. The Canadians just waved us thru. 2 minutes vs 2 hours. That was the first time in 5 years that I've been sent inside on the US side.

Where are the club level matches held?
 
I crossed at Oroville several times this year to shoot F class at Rattlesnake. No problem using printed copies... I get emailed or faxed the form 6

Every crossing, we go inside, have a nice sit, then come out for an inspection. Some have gotten to know our gear very well. But as long as paperwork matches the gear, "have a great match guys" and away we go.

Will look at doing a match or two next season for a change vs F class. Just need to get my McGowen Rem 783 barrel up here to start working up a load.

Look forward to a change of pace.

I tried but the only other accuracy node I could find was up at 45.0 grains of Varget and I was getting sticky bolt lift in some pretty mild temperatures. Current load is 43.0 grains. Nice and tight but lacking oomph. Nothing in between shot worth a damn at 200 yards. Haven't had a chance to try my dope past 875 yards but was spot on to that distance.

We had the same experience at Oroville, all business till they had matched the serial numbers to the paperwork and then it was:"oooh, those are nice... I've been meaning to try long range... Good luck in the match!" All nice guys. Email sent Jerry.
 
Just beware the "nice little old lady".... Yes, it is a real thing.... we can chat about that later :)

My experience with US customs has been positive.... keep exactly, perfectly within the rules and they are just fine.

Jokes and sarcasm are things they have no tolerance for... Nor do they care why your paperwork has errors or missing.

Most really like rifles and are just itching to get through the formalities to chat you up on our games and gear. But until you are "cleared", it is all business

Ok..

Well, as you know every action is different.

Often, people push 175-178's at ~45.0 gr Varget. As you know, these are moderate loads and need to be tested safely.

Older (as in only 6-8 year old) reloading manuals used to list Varget @ 45.0C max load. Even then they were laywered quite a bit.
