PSA re: bolt failures in recent import M-14 pattern rifles

I got a reply back from my email. NS wants to know whats what and what my first borns mothers maiden name is. I haven't filled out the questions and sent it back yet. im going to assume FA will happen however

I did put up an add for an older norc bolt and hope it will be in the ballpark. had a nice gent offer me one in the PM for 300$ I didn't reply. I do have a USGI TRW here and its no way. wont even start to close, so no way

if anyone reading this has an older norc bolt , im looking but sorry not willing to pay 300

Talk to M14Medic, he may be able to trade that USGI for another USGI one that he could lap in for you. If you aren't 100% sure you know what you're up to it would be good to get it done by a professional anyway. Alternately, if a re-barrel is something you might be interested in at some point, your existing USGI bolt could probably be mated up to a new barrel pretty easily at whatever headspace you want.

Yeah, I definitely grossly over simplified that.

“Drop and go”... after checking lug contact and headspace. In my head, I was meaning that no adjustment was required. Measurement, well I just made assumptions on that part. My bad.

Back to the porch for me.

no sweat man, I wasn't trying to call you out
I come across very abrupt and @ssholish sometimes but once ya get past that , I'm not so bad hehehe

well ive built more than a few aswell, and the reciver isn't going to accept a USGI bolt, even an out of spec one I don't think. not my rifle im sure the owner isn't interested in spending much of anything on this. funny how things work I was laying here thinking I have a box full of reject parts someplace. went looking and found them. have an older way grossly out of spec bolt that let headspace be well past the dangerous point in the rifle it came out of years ago. it dropped into the rifle and will need a tiny bit of lapping to drop all the way in before I can check headspace. funny how things work

Wow $300 for a norinco bolt? That's what I've seen USGI bolts going for. Usually I see norinco going for $100 +/-

That TRW would work great if you changed the barrel for GI or commercial new. Just saying. The Norc barrels are no prize anyhow.

WRT post-2009 rifles, if the receiver is FORGED - it's likely still OK for a GI build, but the other chinese components are far more likely to not be of sufficient quality for a decent build.

yes however the owner doesn't want to spend that kinda coin or get that deep into it

Thanks for the info everyone.

I was going to buy a New Norinco M305, and kit it out...

But this thread made me change my mind. Maybe I will save up and buy a stag 10 instead...

Buy a low mileage older one. They're great. Get what you really want though. If its a non restricted AR style platform, then get that. If its a Garand / M14 type rifle, get something used.

Oh no worries. Someone reading it who knew nothing about the platform, but were familiar with AR’s, could have easily thought “Sweet, another modular system where I can just swap the pieces in and out, then just go”.

Hi CGNers,

What are some telltale signs to check if my receiver is cast or forged. It's a newer production socom and my bolt is MIM.

Probably the easiest thing to do is to post high-resolution pictures of all sides of the receiver, outside of the stock, particularly the heel. As far as I know the only cast receivers on Norc M-14s that we've seen so far are on the 7.62x39 models, but I may be out of date on my info.

Incorrect. 2016 and later, there are cast .308 receivers mixed in with forged. Somewhere on cgn I posted pics of forged vs cast receivers. But am too lazy to go look for it.

Bottom line, if you have not seen dozens of both, they might be hard to spot. Good photos here and we'll sort you out.

FWIW, the chinese DO machine many, if not most surfaces after it is cast, so finding machining marks here and there is not definitive.

Just got the same. Mine is MIM and has the circles... My LGS said 1 year warranty and is checking go/nogo and barrel indexing right now on it.

Ah hell, I just bumped the other thread about 308 cast receivers. You're welcome.

thank youuu

So for those who have a bolt with the death circles... Are we all just waiting to see if it blows up?

Can we source bolts from somewhere?

You can get a full IDF kit from Wolverine, no real guarantee that the recent Nork receivers are in spec and the bolt will fit it.
The best option is to just return it, North Sylva is the distributor and will do nothing about these time bombs even though they have been made aware of it several times. If the LGS has any issue with returning it, let them know there are several documented cases of these MIM bolts failing, and they will be the first one on your list for legal action if anyone gets injured. They can send all of these POS back to North Sylva for a refund, which I would recommend ANY gun shop with these in inventory to do.

ahh, not likely going to spend the same I spent on the rifle on extra parts that "might fit". I asked wolverine if they sold the bolts. They said they don't.

Let local gun store know, they said they had not heard anything. I have them checking head spacing and barrel indexing. They said there is a 1 year return policy.

Guess we will see if mine blows up :) lol

It will, usually in under 100 rounds. MIM just isn't designed for the kind of beating and pressures put on M14 bolts.
Has nothing to do with headspace or indexing, the bolt material is just crap on these new ones.
Sucks too because that was the most redeeming feature of these rifles...all forged, mostly in spec parts and not a crazy price. Now the parts are garbage, the receiver's are out of spec, bolts are blowing up and they are still the same price as before.

why keep it?
if it has an MIM bolt you already know what is bound to happen
Why risk personal injury?
If they have a 1 year return policy, return it now for a store credit and get into a different rifle.

this IS the best advice you are going to get.
