Ptarmigan in Manitoba Interlake?

Was hunting for grouse in the Eriksdale area, and was walking through a field and multiple birds took off about the same size of a grouse but were white/light grayish. they flew like grouse, and landed in the trees. didn't make many noises other than their wings flapping.

I was under the assumption that Ptarmigan are only found further north? Didn't manage to get a shot off as it kinda surprised me to see, and I wasn't 100% sure what they were at the time. :confused:
 
Sharptails do look white/greyish when flying. Ptarmigan should be pure white now. I seriously doubt you'd see ptarmigan that far south.

looked white when stationary too, flew into the trees and most were white, a couple looked kinda speckled. I was under the same assumption about them being that south, guess ill try and bag one and see.
 
I'd also suggest sharp-tailed grouse. One of my buddies swore he shot a ptarmigan years ago, until we killed a couple sharptails and he had a closer look at them. He realised then that his 'ptarmigan' was actually a sharptail. They do look quite pale / white.... and I don't think I've ever heard of a ptarmigan landing in a tree.
 
A buddy of mine was throwing back a ton of "baby" halibut one day this summer, said every 30mins he had one on the line. So changed locations.

That evening he found out they were Sole.
