Lots of them up here in NWT. I got up early and went for a drive out of town this morning. (early is a relative term, I got up at 745 as it was still dark put here till close to 830.

Got one bird and brought it home and cooked it on the frying pan with some olive oil and spices the. Put it in a sandwich.

Their meat is a dark red closer to Canada Goose and cooks looking like beef. Tasty though!

Nice one! If you don't mind me asking, where did you get him? I have been up and down Vee Lake Rd every weekend and when there aren't too many people walking their dogs I have run into a couple rabbits and spruce grouse. No ptarmigan though.

The joke about cooking ptarmigan... put the bird and a rock in a pot and boil them until the water evaporates. Then throw the bird away and eat the rock!

I usually pan fry them with a little light breading then eat 'em with some spuds.

Very Nice cerickson! They are occassionally spotted "down here" in NE Alberta. The 500 WMUs of Alberta along with Willmore have an extended season.
The problem is finding them. Last year I did actually see one of them. This year, none to be found locally AFAIK. They must be in hiding, along with the sharptails and spruce grouse this year. The one I did see was very early last fall. What confused me is that when I viewed it, it was in it's summer plummage.

There are good numbers of willows around here small flocks of 20 - 30 birds as well as larger flocks of Rock Ptarmigan from up north here for the winter. It will be good eating this winter.
