Ptrd??

The photo below is of my pair of 14.5s...the PTRS and the PTRD.

Photo below is of another board member's PTRD along with a couple Boys rifles (one in 55 cal and mine, converted to 50) at a match here in Shilo.

Thanks Rob. What about the Boys .55 cal? How does that compare? And is the 14.5mm shown a HMG round or is that also the size of the PTRD/PTRS round? I'm assuming it is. And is that the same round used in Russian HMGs?

Anybody have a 20mm Lahti round to compare a 14.5mm PTRS/PTRD or Boys round?

All this talk of anti-material/vehicle guns keeps reminding me of Die Hard - "Hit it again"

They would be a hoot to own, but the price tag for ammo alone kills that thought. I stick with me infantry rifle and FMJ's. Here is something that I posted in the 'Your favorite milsurp thead'

"...my '42 Maltby No4 Mk1, b/c its the one I used when a friend and I got to kill a pontiac 6000. We started with SP hunting ammo. They just buried itself in the engine block and pieces of bullet came to rest in the passenger seat (after traveling through the dash, firewall, and extremities of the engine). Then we switched to FMJ's, and they started to penetrate much better.

The last round we fired, went through the firewall-dashboard-steering column-driver seat (both the foam then the steel support withing the seat)-rear seat, and finally the frame around the rear window, taking pieces of the car with it. Some where along the line it shed the jacket, b/c I cut the seat apart and found pieces of copper jacket in the foam. (along with pieces of dashboard and steering column).

You can read articles and see video and picture, but it really helps to put things into perspective when you can view the damage first hand. We figured that if there were people in the car, that the driver would be dead, the guy behind him probably, and we were not to sure about anyone behind the car, b/c the first two would have slowed the bullet down, but they would not get away unscathed."

Same round in the ATRs and the HMGs, the 14.5 x 114mm. When I was overseas a unit came across a number of the rounds in a cache and I would have killed to have taken them home to use in my PTRD!

The 55 looks identical to the BMG, except that it has a belt on the case. No Lahti rounds here....I am concentrating only on Cdn issued firearms now.

Apparently the MG ammo is a bit hotter, and it's use in the rifles should be avoided.

Firing any of the anti-tank rifles is a real adrenaline rush, and worth the $25 and up per round that it costs to feed them. My converted Boys rifle is actually the best of both worlds; a legendary rifle and relatively economical and readily available ammo.

They easily go through an inch of steel plate, and when you start shooting one, the range shack clears as guys come over to witness a bit of history.

Thanks Missing Something. Here's two pics of Finnish soldiers using the Lahti L39 during the Winter or Continuation War. A shoulder fired 20mm ATR - those Finns must have been tough!

During the late 1950s and early 1960s, a lot of this stuff was available. The PTRD and PTRS, the 20mm Lahti, The Solothurn and others.

The Boyes anti-tank rifles sold for $89.95 and you could choose a Mark I or Mark II version. PIATs were less than a $20 bill.

I bought a small French anti-tank gun on wheels for $149 in the USA along with 20 rounds of ammo. When I pulled into Canada Customs at Fort Erie, with the gun in the back of a pick up truck under canvas, the Customs Officer asked what I had, then asked to see it. His comment was "that's neat," and then he charged me about $8 duty on it, and away we went.

There are still a few of these guns around, but expensive.

Damn it what was wrong with the good old days?. Why did everyone have to go and #### up a good thing.

Any chance of you posting a thread on your converted Boys? I'd like to learn what kind of modifications you needed to make.

Done a few years back. Check out this link.

Collectors source has one right now that is theoretically a functioning rifle, but with a weld in the breech. It could do with the same conversion. The rifle is priced reasonably at just 5K.
