Last night I clicked on the tube and caught the last hour of the movie Public Enemies that had lots of wild gun play with Thompsons, Monitors (BARs) 1911s and shotguns. There is a fellow here (Wrangler?) that works in the movie business and I ask him, and others, how do you make a thompson like so "real" firing blanks? Empty casings flying everywhere, huge muzzle flash from the Cutts Comp so you know there is no BFA on it, just curious how this is done. I also like how everybody did mag and drum changes which added a nice touch of realism, I will have to see the whole movie when it plays again.

Afaik, many guns have a 'movie' version for Hollywood. Not sure if the actual manufacturer makes them but I have read that the mp5 also has a 'movie' version. I think I read it on imfdb.org

a common solution is to tap the inside of the muzzle and install a bolt, then cut off the head and drill a small hole through it. works like a BFA but isnt visable

I was thinking that new barrels had been turned with a restricted muzzle so the "bfa" is hidden and the gun looks and functions as it should when firing live (blank) rounds. The weapons signature upon firing looked pretty damn good and I almost lean towards some scenes being shot with live (balled) rounds, like when the big shoot out at the end shooting through glass windows. The Thompsons muzzle flash looked like a lot of wasted energy that would have been better used to work the action, but the guns looked like they where cycling fine. Maybe special loaded stunt blanks?? Wrangler good sir, tell us how Hollywood makes the magic happen.

Pistol "Dillinger" carried looked like early model colt 1900. Wish they would stick to real timelines. Both Nelson and Floyd were killed before Dillinger. Lots of full auto fire, doubt the real encounters were as ammo-intensive. Alvin Karpis was Canadian.

Nyles, thanks man. Thats really informative, looks like the movie worked at getting this (gun wise) accurate. Amazing that gangsters/armourers made pistols go full auto back then and with foregrips off a Thompson, never knew.
