A land use map is helpful: it identifies crown land vs owned lands, and for owned lands, identifies the owner.
As others have said, if you're going to go out and knock on a few doors BEFORE HUNTING SEASON (with requests for permission in exchange for some chores), it's nice to know the name of the guy answering the door.
In all my years of hunting on farmland in Alberta, I only ever had one owner say no. Normally it was "Okay, but no shooting on the home quarter, and don't shoot my cows."
