I,m thinking of buying on of these. What I would like to do is have the magazine shortened to a half mag style. Has anyone done this or know if it can be done? Thanks

It should be possible as Dan said, but there will be a bit more to it as the Puma .454 has an inner and outer tube (like a tube mag .22). Both tubes will have to shortened and a new loading slot cut in the outer tube. A good gunsmith should be able to do this for you.

Call LSI you can find their contact info here http://www.legacysports.com/ and ask if they can sell you the mag tube assembly for the 16" gun.

I have no idea why you would want this modification though but myself if I wanted the shorter tube I would have just bought the 16" barreled rifle to begin with.

Now that I have handled both and if I didn't need the gun for Cowboy action shooting competitions (10 round 45 Colt capacity) I would have gone with the shorter handier 16" barreled rifle.

I personally went with the 20" barrel which gives me 9 454 Casull and 10 45 Colt rounds in the mag tube I believe the 16" rifle gives you 6 454 Casull in the tube.

With pistol cartridges you don't really loose much in velocity between a 16" - 20" barrel.

Get rid of the rear fiber optic sight which is the worst rear sight I have ever used and replace it with an XS Ghost Ring sight or like I did installed my 1895GS rear sight you will turn this little rifle into a tack driver.

I am amazed at the long distance accuracy as well and the tragectory of the rounds I was shooting out to 200+ yards at a stump in a pond. I figured I would need to shoot at least 1 1/2' above the stump but the bullets hit exactly where I was aiming so I started aiming dead on and hit the small stump.

Geologist was with me and we were both amazed...

Plus if you reload you can load up with 240gr to 405gr bullets, I was shooting 300gr XTP-Mag's with 30grs H110 these are some of my Ruger SRH revolver loads.

Campcook. The reason for the short mag is strictly cosmetics. I like the look of the old winchester 92 customs with shotgun butt and half mag. Have a look at Ron Kassabs story called "a special Winchester "on rarewinchesters.com

"...thinking of buying..." Look into the cost and availability of ammo first.

Don't forget you can shoot 45 Colt out of these as well and if you reload the only expense that is more for the 454 Casull is the brass and a bit more powder.
