I am considering buying a 357 lever rifle to use when I am at the range with my handguns. The two I have found that I am interested in are the Marlin 1894C and the Puma 92. Does anyone here have any first hand experience that could be handed along to help me narrow down my decsion?

GO MARLIN I have the .357 only rifle in the herd I would never part with. Have taken good size Bambis a few Yogis and a crap load of Beavers and Coyotes. Don't leave home without it.
THANKS, Pete...

Fit and finish of the marlin will most likely be far better than a Puma.

I used to have a 1894 Cowboy in 45 Colt and it was an excellent rifle I now have a 454 Casull Puma in stainless steel that just isn't the same quality.

I sold the Marlin and went with the Puma only because it was available in stainless/454 Casull.

Thanks for the info. I want this rifle for the range more than anything; I shoot a pile of 38 Special though my S&W 28 and it would be nice to have a rifle that I can feed the same ammo through to allow a bit of riflle practice as well.

Do the Pumas in Canada have the safety on top of the bolt like the photos I have seen from the states? I want to mount a receiver sight on this rifle and the Puma probably would not work if it had the safety on top.

I had my mind set on a marlin 1894c but no shop in this country has them so I've been considering getting a puma. Do they cycle well with 38's ? How hard is it to get parts for a puma if you need them?

357 marlin???

Dunno about the .357 as I am not interested in such limited use calibre in a rifle.:runaway:

So I am at the range with my 3 screw ruger SA revolver and marlin lever action and sometimes my marlin 45 70 too. Shooting away with a bucket of 38 special reloads at a 14" gong at 50 meters. 10 cents a round.
Ping, ping, ping.

The boys are there with their plastic pistols.
Or 300 short mags.

You know who is having more fun:dancingbanana:

I have the Puma in .44 Mag, I've had it for 18 years and fired a lot through. My absolute favourite bush gun by far!

I have a Marlin M1894S in .44 Mag that put over 9,000 rds of Cowboy Action ammo through it before it broke the rear part of the firing pin. 10 minute repair job after I got the part. The front part of the firing pin broke 1,500 rds later. Those are the only problems that I have encountered. I would highly recommend a Marlin product

The 1892 was made from the start for short pistol rounds with a super strong lock up! Really hard to beat,if I remember right they loaded some real hot 454 rounds up and blew up the Marlin,Win 94's and the Mod 92 was last to go!

marlin is the way to go!

I only had one puma in .357 mag, & it wouldn't feed the SWC type bullets. trying to feed them through the loading gate they would get hung up on the shoulder of that bullet. pehaps it was just this one gun that was like this, not sure!

I have these 2 & they cycle & shoot fine, heck if you cycle the lever slow, the .357 will even shoot full wadcutter ammo,.....which is great for rabbit hunting.

Ruffbird.

I have the Marlin and really like it. It cycles both 38 spcl and 357 mag ammo fine. It too doesn't like SWC bullets, they hang up as said about the puma, but if the lever is worked carefully they will work. Accurate little gun, no complaints. Good luck, Eric
