Pump Action 22 Rifles

There are so many really cool looking pump action shotguns available but no modern looking 22's.

"Cool" is in the eye of the beholder. I think my Winchester Model 62A is pretty cool.

If you want "modern", why not just get something like a Ruger SR22? Pump action .22s are a technology that has largely been superseded by semi-autos. Asking why there are no modern-looking pump .22s is like asking why there are no modern-looking slide rules or Curta calculators. Those that like 'em, like 'em precisely because they're old-fashioned.

Looks like I have to explain this again....If pump action is old fashioned then why are there so many new modern looking P/A shotguns on the market ?

1. The masses have unrefined taste.

2. You can buy a good pump shotgun for much less than a good semi-auto shotgun. Compare prices for, say a Remington 870 Wingmaster or Browning BPS with the self-loading offerings from Benelli, Browning, or Beretta.

3. Generally speaking, pump shotguns are less ammo-sensitive and more rugged than their semi-auto counterparts.

Pump action fills a definite mass-market niche with shotguns, whereas with .22s, the primary appeal is novelty, hence the reason that Remington is the sole source for new ones. Nobody would buy a pump .22 that looked like a Benelli Nova at the price they would have to sell for.

RE: Pump Shotty popularity... I'm guessing but, it might also be that, "services" have used pump shotguns. That makes them desirable for some. Police and, Military using something makes them "cool"...

It's a good example (pump shotty) as, there are now 2 categories in the forums. "Hunting" and, "Black". There are no such distinctions in the .22 forum.

Support: Does "dressing" a 10/22 (or any .22) to appear like a "black" rifle actually affect it's performance? Nope. Just looks "groovy" to some...big enough market, sell 'em! On the same note...can you buy a "new" bolt action shottie?

Hate to sound too "fudd-y" but, I'm not that sad there's no "tacticool" pump .22.

That said, I'm also a creature of habit...My Mossber500 is the only gun, I've purchased for myself, "new"...that was24- 25 years ago. I've used/owned other shotties but wouldn't consider a replacement for it.

......Took it gopher hunting with a friend who didn't know it was a pump action. The second he heard the *schk- schk* his head spun around with a WTFWT look......

Great story! I can just imagine the look in his eyes at hearing the lightly scaled down sound of a pump shotgun beside him when he knows you've only got a .22.... :D

Ballox, for new I'm afraid that you're reasonably stuck with the Henry pump gun. I'm just not seeing any others out there that are still made.

The good news about that is that us Henry owners have all found out that the Henry guns are highly reliable and shoot very well. My own H001 lever .22 is one of the smoothest running out of the box guns I've had to date. And it's only getting smoother feeling as I run up the rounds count.

I would not turn my back on some of the good used options. Especially if you can check them out personally. A year back I managed to score an old late 1920's vintage Remington Model 12 that came with an old Tasco 4x .22 scope. More recently I found a VERY LIGHTLY used Rossi clone of the Winchester 61 pump. Both feel superb and shoot darts. I gave up nothing at all for them being used. I also got the Remington for only $210 and the Rossi for $250. So they ended up being just about half of what a new Henry would run you.

And I totally agree with tjhaille. The masses DO have very unrefined tastes....

Don't even know who sells the henry in Canada. Saw a pump action 357 in the new gun book, can't remember who makes it but might be fun but a lot more expensive to shoot than a 22.

WSS had Henry lever guns on the rack so they should be able to order them in if you ask. Actually I'll bet most dealers can order in Henry firearms if you ask.

I'd have to be pretty desperate to try ordering something in through wss. Tried that once years ago, waste of time. Even getting something brought in from one of their other stores is a hassle. I defended them for years when people bashed them, but no more. I would be happy to see that chain fold.

Come to think of it I've seen a few tales of woe about ordering from WSS as well. Maybe try some of the small stores that try harder to please. And mailorder from the site sponsors works so well that I'd find one of them with some Henry stock and contact them to see if they can get a pump from one of their suppliers.

It's either that or start haunting the shows, EE and shops that take in consignment guns for a used pump .22. A show and a shop consignment is how I got my Remington M12 and Rossi M61 clone Gallery Gun.

Not really a tale of woe, just tired of them. Handy for those last minute things that come up though. I agree, try the site sponsers. The couple I've bought from had excellent service.

Way to go...I thank all of you!

I was pretty happy with my Rossi but, have just "made a trade" and, will have:
Winchester 1890 (in 22L)
Remington 12C(s, l, lr)
Marlin 20A(s, l, lr)
entering my safe. These are all "projects" that I'm looking forward to fondling but, may have jumped well into the "deep end" with them...

I was a HUGE semi .22 fan for decades... After I got the Rossi I wondered why I'd deprived myself the pleasure. More info to follow...
