Has anyone ever seen or heard of a pump action 45-70? I was toying with the idea of getting a remington pump gun (7600) and getting it done in 45-70 , anyone hear of anyone else that has done this ? Any problems like feeding etc,,

I don't see why it could not be done, but with decent lever actions in 45-70 like the Marlin on the market, the question has to be why?

I know, because we are gun nutz not gun rationalists!!!

Exactly:D

I like the round , big bullets and reasonable recoil (allready have the lever section covered) so i figured why not make a copy of 12 bore 870 turkey gun that i am really familier with .
I figure it would be a great addition to my collection .

Of course before the project could be started i would have to get the wifes approval :runaway: (I can hear it now " If you get to have a new rifle then i want a new rifle":D )

anyone ever had one made or heard of one??

Please don't do that. If it catches on then you know I'll have to get one and I've already used up this quarter's firearms funds. (Can you at least put it off till after Christmas?);) )

I don't think the flanged cases would feed from the magazine. Easier to buy a 7600 in 35Whelen.

.

Wonder how much a 35Whelen can be necked up?If you can neck it up to 44 or 45.That would feed.Good luck keeping the action closed when you fire it.

The .411 Hawk sounds like it might be my cup of tea:D I would really prefer to be able to pick up a box of Ammo if for some reason i do not have any Handloads with me (forgotten:rolleyes: )

Its a little hard to get custom barrels for the 7600 without spending big dough.

I love the concept - the 7600 is a great platform. Especially for a close in bone-breakin' fast-action animal-shutter-upper cartridge like the 45-70, and of course it would let you use pointy bullets.

But i think for the money you'd pay it'd be a bit onerous. You should email remington and tell 'em to get with the program :) 45-70 or 450 hornady-marlin would be awesome.

Would a Rem870 or BPS action in 410 be enough to handle a 444 or 45-70 if you could get a barrel made for it?Would be slick if it is strong enough.

Shotshells normally operate at 11,000 Lup(.410) .444 Marlin is rated at 44,000 cup, non of these conversions make sense and are not feasible.....I don't even know about the .411 hawk.....seems the .405 Win. covers the same territory!

the .410 action would probably feed the cartridges, but pressure for shotguns is soooo low that you'd have to down-load it to a mere shadow of itself.

I like the idea, makes more intuitive sense to me than the converted #4 or siamese mauser bolts I've seen in .45-70.

I bet the .450 Marlin would feed better from the mag tho...

I think 375/06 would be about the max and still have a shoulder to headspace on.

My 7600 Whelen opens and ejects (about 3') the cases from 250gr loads every time.

.

check out HawkCartridges in regards to headspaceing .

I shall investigate the 45-70 option a bit more.

search out a Browning pump rifle (BPR) in a belted mag cartridge and get one done up in 450 Marlin...should be a straight forward rebarrel on that one....heck..you may as well make it a 458 Winchester then...

The .400 Brown Whelan was around awhile but it is known to give headspace troubles with the shoulder pretty much gone. The 06 case would not go up to .458" bullets.
The shotgun action would be really weak I think, pressures would have to be so low I doubt it would be worth doing.
It sounds really interesting for the pump gun fans if it would work on a Remington action. I have no idea what the biggest cartridge body these will take is though.
The Colt Lightenings I have seen have all been in .44-40, that action is very small.
What is the biggest round they have put in the Remington pump rifles?
A lever in this caliber would surely be easier, but a lot of guys like pumps!
The BPR as Rembo says would be a natural.

The only large cal. pump action I could find (outside of some Remmi .308s)...
