Pump Action Centerfires

Remington 760 -My dad bought one the first year they came out ,they were not even drilled and tapped for a scope, the next year they came out drilled and tapped cause my grandfather bought one.before that they used Remington model 14's and model 141's . Those two rifles shoot more than there share of game for over 40 years before my dad retired them to the locker. They are a noise gun when your whitetail hunting ,rattles of the action.

I've got a Savage 170 in 35 Rem. Makes a great brush buster, haven't had a complaint with it yet except that it kicks the hell outta my shoulder when using the Hornady Evolution 200 gr stuff.

That's an interesting one, what year is it? Did they come in any other cals?

Last pump I had was a .308 Rem 760. I decided to sell it the day the action wouldn't open and I had a wounded elk standing 50 yards away. Bashing it repeatedly on a tree finally pursuaded the action to open but likely devalued the gun when I sold it the next day. It was and will be my last!!!!!!

That setup is on my "list" of retro rifles to hunt with. I'd suspect it's pretty handy in the thick stuff for whitetails (or even mule deer and blacktails). Not very common out here, in 35 remington!

I've never had that happen while hunting with tested loads and a clean chamber.

I have had it happen at the range while testing and happen to get a hot load, but then thats been with bolts and pumps alike.

Ya, not sure what happened. It was a lot of years ago with a factory load on a very, very cold day.......not saying it happens often but once was way too often for me!

funny you mention that -I was shooting my remington 788 243 and factory loads-and the bolt was really stiff to open.Didn't think that would happen with factory ammunition...

Made in 1970.

Only two calibers, the 30-30 and the 35 Rem. The 30-30's are alot easier to find. Saw a carbine 170 in mint condition the other day in 30-30 and could have bought it but I knew he was gonna give it to his daughter if I didn't take it and I already had the 35 Rem so I passed. 170's in 35 Rem are a rare find.

Well, theres lots of things to love about pump action rifles.....and especialy Remington pumps. Lots of variety of calibres. Quality workmanship. Have a look at the workmanship on the older takedown model 12 .22's, the not so common model 25's in 25-20 and 32-20, the 121 .22's, the model 14's and 141's. Then the 760 /7600 series with detachable magazines....a hunters dream.
As a left handed shooter pump action rifles are a godsend. As a lefty I used to carry a rh bolt action .222 while hunting jack rabbits.....thats kinda tough on a running jack but becomes much more fun with a pump action.
I still own a 760 in .222 that has no problem shooting 1" groups and once owned a 6mm that put 3 bullets through the same hole at 100 yds.
Look at the history books. There is a famous painting by Frederick Remington of a buffalo hunter on horse back shooting a Colt Lightning pump action rifle, another quality pump action rifle. And don't forget that Winchester made several models of 22 cal pump rifles......06, 1890, 61, 62.
So Savage made some, Colt, Remington, Winchester, CIL [probably made by Savage], Henry, Rossi.
I happen to own about a dozen of them..............and why not.
