Tell me the good, bad, and ugly.

The next rifle I was considering is a lever action. Now, the pump action design has caught my eye.

Those who have owned them, tell me about your experiences with them.

I want to use it for still hunting and general thick bush hunting

I have four of them and I haven't found anything that I don't like about them. They are accurate and very fast cycle time for the needed fast follow up shots. Come in good calibres for most hunting and are comfortable to shoot as well. You can't go wrong with a pump.

I have an '06 in a remington pump action from the 80's. It's in absolutely PRISTINE condition. 100% as good as new. Has only been fired once before I got it, maybe 10 rounds. Was bought by a friend of my dad's who later decided than hunting wasn't for him. It's a gorgeous piece and was made before high-quality walnut became hard to find.

I've only taken it out once myself and put a box of ammo through it. Does 2" groups or so - not bad at all, considering it's not even done breaking in yet.

It's certainly a different piece than the usual assortment you find at the range, and I'll never part with it.

I've a Remington model 14 (build around 1916) in .30 REM, twin to .30-30. Wonderful rifle, it's my go-to bush rifle for deer out at the lake.

I have a Remington Model 6 '06. Nice rifle, kinda long for the bush though. Shoots real nice. Never really noticed the rattle on the forearm though.

Took it caribou hunting a few years back and subjected it to some heavy duty, multiple days of rain. Some water found its way through the butt and into the end grain of the stock. The walnut swelled a little. :( Why isn't the wood protected where it is most vunerable? It was after this that I really started to appreciate stainless and synthetic as an any/all weather rifle.

Goes along with the 572 and 870 if you know what I mean. ;)

Next fastest thing to a semi-auto without all the finniky issues keeping semi chambers clean & lubed so they don't jam. I can stay on target with a pump much better than a lever or a bolt. AND if you find a 10 round magazine for your Remington- it is legal. Yes, they do rattle. I always wondered what a Browning pump would be like, I know they aren't made any more, but were available in .300 Mag. My Remi 760 is a 30-06. Was bought from widow of a man who bought it new to go moose hunting, only had one hunt and died of a heart attack. Best $250 I ever spent. Stripped the finish and re-did with tung oil (including under the recoil pad I replaced the butt plate with). Mine will shoot 1" groups with handloads.

why wouldnt he stay on target? You dont have to take your finger off the trigger to work the action.

Like I said, I was wanting to use one for a walking gun. The bolt guns I have are more for sitting and waiting for deer/moose to show up.

If i can find one I may have to pick it up. I think it would be a great graduation present to myself for finishing up college. College is over when 8 months? sigh, Im gonna have awhile to wait.

I have a rem 760 carbine in 308.....

I have an 760 in 300 Savage. Like the other guys say:

they shoot accurately enough
they are fast in follow up shots
they can rattle a little if you are not careful

This year will be my second year hunting with it.

I own three of them. 2/760s and 1/7600. Only the the 7600 rattles and on that one it's only one of the spare mags I have for it.

BUT ..... I have seen some of the old style forends on the 760s rattle a fair bit. If you are looking for a 760, get of of the new style one with the forend like the 7600s. They tend to be better.
