being a newbie, I gotta ask some obvious questions, looking for some maybe obvious answers from some of the guys and or gals that have some experience with shotguns. I was looking for a decent but cheaper priced short barreled shotgun. 300$ and down. there is a savage stevens on EE for 315$ it looks nice, are they any goood? what about mavericks? mossberg 500$ a decent used ithaca model 37? I appreciate the help guys, thanks

Me I'm shootin' a Mossberg 590a1. It's big, it's heavy and it's oh so macho. From what I understand the US Navy has a contract with Mossberg for 590a1's (not that that means much...) The 590a1 is built to last.. and it shows in the weight. If you ran out of ammo on the battle field it would become a fancy war club :D I have never had a failure with it.. I bet it will get past down to my grand kids grand kids. This doesn't really answer your questions, but it's just my $0.02. It costs a bit more than what you are looking for, but IMO it will go toe to toe with any 870P out there for basically half the price.

I LIKE THE 590 A1, definitely a sweet shotgun built to military spec, it is a bit more than i wanna spend though, i will keep my eye open though, who knows maybe i will spend a bit extra. you figure the 590a1 is better than rem 870?

I'm an 870 fan but I have to say the 870 did not pass the US military tests. The Mossberg did!

For a low dollar, tactical-type gun, look at the Mossberg 500 Persuader. Quite a bit less expensive than the 590s. Proven history and low dollar.

The 870 did not pass military tests? Do you know why? Remington did not enter the 870 into the military trials. It has passed numerous times in the past, as well as just about every police department on the planet's tests.

An 870 would be an excellent choice.

It is a fact that Remington did not participate in the, now famous, US military trials that ended up with the gun we now know as the Mossberg 590A1 coming out in top spot. It is pure speculation as to what Remington's motivation was to pass on these trials. The common belief is that Remington was already selling 870's at full capacity to police departments and other government agencies and had nothing to gain by winning the trials; while on the other hand, if they were to come in anything other than first place there could very well be a negative effect on their other LE/govt sales...

But either way, Remingtons and Mossbergs are both tried and tested guns. People can argue back and forth, but they are both great guns that are unlikely to let you down when you need them most.

In my opinion, the 590a1 is better than your basic 870 express in terms of QC and reliability... In my opinion only that is. I think an 870 Police magnum is more of a competition for a 590a1. However I'd choose an 870 express over a regular 590, or 500.

personally im getting pretty sick of hearing Mossberg parrot its 'the only shotgun to ever pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test' bullsh*t over and over again in their marketing.
they neglect to mention that it was also the only shotgun ever submitted for testing

~$300 short barreled shotgun: buy a Grizzly. its the best bang for your buck going. all metal parts, better machining than an 870 Express, shorter barrel (out of the box) than youll find on anything from Remington or Mossberg.

id highly recommend the 870 platform as a first shotgun. it is hands down the most versatile and popular platform. if theres something you dont like about it, you can visit the EE or just about any gun shop in North America and remedy it -- or change the gun into something completely different. the Mossberg 500/590 is also a great gun and almost as versatile, albeit with less parts and accessories available on the EE.
id definitely stay away from anything other than these, however, as they have virtually nonexistant aftermarkets and lack the steady flow of used/take-off parts in the EE.

nice grizz. is that yours manbearpig? and to the OP, you dont need to spend alot on a good pump. any 870/590/500/grizz etc will take a beating from hell and keep goin strong. Ive got a maverick 88 cruiser that has chambered, fired and ejected every major brand of shells out there without a hiccup. Infact, most of the negativity you hear about any of the above mentioned shottys is from someone who owns something different! remington owners call grizzlies junk while grizzly owners call remington overpriced junk etc. I think they all kick ass and will rip targets all to hell all day long. For $230 I like my compact, lightweight little 88, and when I have a really bad day my $1500 supernova tactical comes out to mame and destroy helpless targets. Its all up to what you like so I'll say it again: go and handle each, try out the controls, shoulder it and see how it feels and see which one you like best

Why did Remington not enter the 870? Perhaps business is so good they didn't want the extra sales? Or perhaps they felt "IF" the 870 failed it would have been a devastating blow to their image?

As stated, I AM an 870 fan, I have several. I'm not bad mouthing the 870, just stating the Mossbergs are a very good gun at a better price than a Remington.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the US Military specs for a combat shotgun are a bit tougher than even those of the largest police departments'.

And FWIW, there are a LOT of Mossbergs in police cruisers and a heck of a lot in the hands of Military personnel.

"An 870 would be an excellent choice." IF the price were right.

I bought my first Wingmaster for $300 used in great shape and super smooth action...

It's best to handle an 870 and 590 and see which one feels better.

this complete Wingmaster receiver/triggergroup cost me about $175 (i just had the PG on it for size comparison to the Grizzly 8.5, otherwise it wears a full stock). certainly a better value than a current production Express, especially given their horrific machining/finish.

nice grizz. is that yours manbearpig?

it was, but i sold it. i still have the stock laying around somewhere waiting for another 870 receiver though :)

thanks for the input guys. I currently have an ithaca m87 with an 18" barrel and a pistol grip. Its fun to shoot, terrible to aim with....or maybe its just me. But I am looking for a pump SG with a stock, defender style. I was looking at maverick 88, I want another ithacca though, and I am also considering winchester defender, which is moderately priced i believe, if anyone knows a good dealer in southern ontario for winchester I would like to know. I am also now looking at an 870 tactical with ghost ring sights from cabellas for 479$ in their new catalogue. Mossberg 590 A1 for 580$ at another store, any more input on that one??????

why do i even post in these threads?

thanks, well said, but initially i was trying to keep things dirt cheap, and also looking for a bunch of opinions, I imagine they are all good SG, at over the 500$ dollar mark.

did you miss the posts stating you can get a Grizzly or an older 870 Wingmaster for around $300?
the benefit of the 870 platform - especially if you are on a budget - is that you have nearly unlimited upgrade options later on down the road.

Mossberg 500s are also ~$300.
