pump action shotguns

Maybe you should get a stock for your Ithaca and start there.

that was my thought when I bought the IThaca with the pistol grip was to buy a proper buttstock. However, the only place that sells them wants 159$ plus tax and shipping, i was thinking i can get another cheap sg for that price.

did you miss the posts stating you can get a Grizzly or an older 870 Wingmaster for around $300?
the benefit of the 870 platform - especially if you are on a budget - is that you have nearly unlimited upgrade options later on down the road.

Mossberg 500s are also ~$300.

Exactly, the $500 mark means nothing, nor does any price point, at $230 for a brand new Maverick 88 your getting a mossberg 500 with blued steel and crossbolt safety. Rock solid reliable. The 870 has a massive aftermarket, followed closely by the mossbergs. Canam is awaiting their shipment of DA grizzlies starting at $299 with free shipping. All steel shotgun with access to rem 870 aftermarket, screw in choke tubes on 12.5" model etc, etc the list goes on. You dont need to spend much to get a good shotgun in your hands. Go to a gunstore and ask to see each one your interested in. I handled each and every tactical shotgun at Barton's several times each before choosing my Benelli. Personal preference is all that really seperates them

^you can get a Mossberg 500 2-barrel combo for $279 at Cabelas (they are in stock right now).

personally i would wait for the CanAm shipment, $300 for an 870 platform with a metal triggergroup, and a 12.5" barrel with screw-in chokes is a steal.

if a Mossberg 500 fell into my lap i wouldnt complain and would definitely put it to use. or if i needed a new gun right now and couldnt wait for CanAm or a good deal on the EE.
but all else being equal i would choose the 870 simply because of the huge aftermarket and standard length mag tubes/ease of adding mag extensions.

They might be hard to find cheap but it would be a good thing to have with your shotgun. PGO is a bit limited.
What kind of Pistol grip is it? Some of the pistol grips for the Ithacas are a bit rare now as well.

Who has them for $159?

It's big, it's heavy and it's oh so macho. From what I understand the US Navy has a contract with Mossberg for 590a1's (not that that means much...) The 590a1 is built to last.. and it shows in the weight. If you ran out of ammo on the battle field it would become a fancy war club :D I have never had a failure with it..

Trust me, the 590A1's break, just like any other mechanical device, I recently found out. BTW, the warranty service was great direct from Maverick/Mossberg.

ron sharpe of sharpes guns seems to be the only ithaca dealer ive heard of. hes out in dunnville which is about a good 2.5 hrs from my place.... never made it out there yet. thanks for all the input guys. just tonight my buddy told me he would sell me a win defender (tacticak style) and a .303 enfield which is scoped. 400$ for the pair, then he hummed and hawwed about it. If that deal dont go thru im gonna prob get the mossberg 500 combo from cacbellas. thanks manbearpig. i thought the 12.5" barrel might be a bit too short for me.

I have been using 870 all my life, carried it on 3 tours over seas put it through combat, took my parts back at the end of the tours and put them on my weapon back home to shoot everything from birds to large game, love the after market parts for the 870 availible anywhere, my friends have owned mossbergs, they stand up just as well at the end of the day you want a gun/platform that can change with the season and event, the more rounds that are put through these the better the gun operates and feels they will last generations. a reciever that can function with 2.3/4 to 31/2 is something to think about aswell, changing your barrels and furniture to suit your needs. shop around and you will find your reciever that you will want in your price range:cool:

The new Ithaca company will probably sell you a stock for a decent price.

Me I'm shootin' a Mossberg 590a1. It's big, it's heavy and it's oh so macho. From what I understand the US Navy has a contract with Mossberg for 590a1's (not that that means much...) I bet it will get past down to my grand kids grand kids. This doesn't really answer your questions, but it's just my $0.02. It costs a bit more than what you are looking for, but IMO it will go toe to toe with any 870P out there for basically half the price.

give this a look over:

here are my thoughts from that thread:

what you want is the Mossberg 590A1 SPX. Its full metal; Trigger AND trigger guard. It comes with a fiber optic front sight, ghost ring rear sight and a ported barrel. It also comes with an Ontario M-9 Bayonet. Its a great shotgun so far.

My reason for buying that gun over the Remington was for two reasons:

1. the Mossberg came with some upgrades (listed above) and i really liked them. The fiber optic sight alone (IMHO) was worth it.

2. i hear at the time when i was about to make my purchase that remington was undergoing some quality control issues. this may have been unfounded, but i didn't want to take the chance, so i opted for the Mossberg.

the only thing i would change on the mossberg is the stock; i wish it had a slightly shorter stock. this will be easily rectified though. other than that, its a great gun.

i hope that helps!

The only thing I really don't like about the Mossberg 590 is the actual pumping of the action when the hammer is forward. If you look at the action, it is a huge spring, and hammer that the breach block carrier has to go over in order to #### the action. I have tried to smooth this out as much as possible on my gun, but it is still heavy and klunky feeling. Remington is much smoother and lighter! My next project is going to be a Benelli Nova or Super Nova rigged out for 3 gunning!

I can't see how someone can put a pistol grip and hang tons of crap off a shotgun and call it an upgrade.

I have a Winchester Defender 1300 for a short shotgun.
I have a Benelli Nova for waterfowl.
I have a Maverick 88 for everything else.

I personally don't like the 870 platform. However everyone else does so it's probably a great reliable shotgun.

why does it have to be a PG and 'tons of crap'? it could be something as simple as changing the stock to something that fits you better.

regarding the 870:
-i can buy a barrel for any of my 870s for about 1/4 the cost of a barrel for your Benelli Nova, and there are dozens available on the EE.
-i can change stocks and forends if i want different ergonomics, shorter LOP, folding stock, etc. again plenty of parts on the EE.
-i can find a mag extension in any gun store, or within 2 minutes on the EE.
-my forend doesnt sound like a baby rattle.
-you can easily adapt a single 870 to fit any of the roles you described and more.

for the record, this is my idea of a 'tactical' shotgun:
870p.jpg

note the lack of a pistol grip or 'tons of crap hanging off it'.
also note that you cant do these relatively simple mods with either of the three guns you listed.

nothing wrong with a Maverick 88 as a budget shotgun, but while Cabelas.ca has the Mossberg 500 2-barrel combo at $279, youd be nuts to buy a Maverick. you can sell whichever barrel you dont want on the EE and have a new Mossberg 500 for just over $200. i wouldnt even bother looking for a used Mossberg on the EE, most well-used ones i see are around the $300 mark

If you read my post again you will see "I". That means it doesn't suit me.
My Benelli is perfect for waterfowl. Exactly why I bought it.
My Winchester defender is identical to the police magnum you have a pic of (in regards to it's role)
The maverick 88 does everything else I need.

Also I said that although I don't like the 870 platform personally, but it must be a great shotgun as a lot of guys use it.

My comment about upgrades wasn't aimed directly at you (although I quoted your post as you mentioned upgrades). It certainly for me has no bearing on why I would buy a shotgun. A fender Stratocaster is probably along the lines of an 870 in terms of popularity, however I own a Telecaster.

I ran across this review a while back and saw it again, ''it's about a breeching round, but the point is what this troop has to say concerning 'Mister 12GA.' that I find 'so very' interesting.'' This is from the 'Cheaper Than Dirt' website on a review of 12GA. ammo.

I am currently serving in Iraq. As SAW gunner I am also "Breech man" for my team. Usually I would kick a door or use a sledge hammer. Both these however, leave me vulnerable to enemies. On the other hand I acquired some of these from a friend here. And let me tell you nothing says "we're coming in" like blowing the bolt and hinges off a door. Usually we get inside to find all the people with there hands up already. These Iraqis have no respect for the M4. But point that Shotgun at them or near them and then they get right! = real quick.

870p > 870 Wingmaster > 590A1 > DA Griz > 870express > the rest

Just my own personal opinion, for the role of "tactical pump shotgun." I seriously doubt I'll buy an 870 express, ever. I have an 870 Super Magnum, which I only keep for the very off chance I ever get an itch for bird hunting. My tactical, fun shotguns, are a 590A1, and an 8.5 inch griz. I'd also not be averse to buying another griz, preferably mag-fed. Only thing that sucks hard about the DA Griz's, is you cannot take them to the USA, for any purpose, ever.

So if you take anything from my post here, it's go ahead and ignore all of the good advice given and buy an Ithaca. I'm sure all the Ithaca fans, are just too busy putting aftermarket parts on the Ithaca's to post about how great they are
