Pump gun accuracy

The scope I rattled apart years ago was a red dot. No recolection of it's quality. The 3200 I use presently has had no issues for some years now. I recomend a 2-7 or a 3-9x magnification scope to take advantage of the sabot slugs ballistics. There are several manufacturers that make purpose made scopes for shotguns and muzzle loaders.

I have an old M37 Ithaca, with an M87 20inch fully rifled barrel. With it's iron sights & Winchester Supreme Gold Partition Sabot slugs (1900 fps with .452 260 grain pistol bullet) it's pretty formidable IMO. It also has enough recoil forces to knock a T-Rex out cold with one shot. :p

Went to the range this morning and have come to the conclusion that the bushnell scope has been hammered one to many times in the last 4 years. I used the remington scope supplied with the barrel and managed to tighten up the groups quite a bit. Tried the accutips and hornady SSt's and was able to get a 3 shot group just over 2 inches with the SSt's. So now, instead of using this scope I think I am going to get a better scope so I can hopefully steer clear of this same scenario down the road. I am looking at either the Prostaff 2 X 7 power or the Slughunter 3 X 9, both by Nikon. The slughunter is roughly $100 more then the Prostaff, other then the magnification and a couple other specs such as eye relief and F.O.V. is there any real difference between the two. I am leaning towards the Slughunter just for the fact that it has a longer eye relief which I like but for $100 if they are roughly the same I just might go with the Prostaff.

You might regret passing up the generous eye relief of the purpose built slughunter. The 385 gr. ammo really kicks and getting popped in the eye by your scope really sucks. The scope internals may be extra heavy duty as well. They are both good scopes though.

I've used a prostaff 2-7 for the past 3 years on my 870 slug gun with no issues so far. No problems with eye relief, and the new prostaffs are supposed to be better yet. I do however wish the prostaff had a little thicker reticle for the slug gun. If I remember correctly the slughunter has buckmaster glass that should be better than that on the prostaff. Leupold also has a vx1 2-7x33 shotgun scope that has a thicker reticle, wider FOV and is lighter than the slughunter for $50 less but still doesn't have the slughunters eye relief. Any of these should serve you well, good luck.
