Who prefers a pump over an auto? My old one has a fixed choke and I am thinking of a new wingmaster which will have screw in chokes for all around shooting.

My buddies all have autos and think I'm crazy to get a pump. One guy who just got into guiding for geese told me his clients would laugh at me if I didn't have a fancy new auotmatic.

To me the autos are heavy, always seem to be srewing up and and a new one is really expensive.

Thanks for your opinions.

I think your guide friend has been sniffing too much Goose ####, I have never known anyone to laugh at a Rem 870 wingmaster.
Like Repete said go with what you like and what feels comfortable, I own both.

Semi automatic shotguns are faster, less recoil, and most times they are as light or lighter than a pump gun... what is your question again?
Oh yeah... I don't care if guys use pump guns when they hunt with me... but I reserve the right to laugh at them thats for sure.

what do u need the gun for?
I think the m1 super 90semi is the best shotgun ive even had but, id bet my life on my 870 marine magnum.

I used both and got laughed at a lot when I was trying to unjam my brand new 11-87 or replace the broken "O" ring. The ones using the 870 were doing the laughing.

precisely.

I had a semi auto for ducks and trap, and always kept it super clean in and out.
After a few times having it jam while hunting, I sold it and stuck to the wingmaster or o/u's that I have. Didn't happen very often, but I just didn't trust the gun anymore, so it had to go.

There he goes again! :p

it's all about personal preference think of your guns like women you bring home the ones that suit YOUR tastes not what everyone else likes

Go with what you like. I have never used an Auto, but I have been known to get my 3 shots off too fast with a pump. I have used Ithacas, 870s, Norincos, and a 90 year old Remington and I have not ever felt that I needed to get my shots off quicker. It is more important to hit what you aim at.:)

pumps can be just as finicky as an auto, i've had my share jams with both. I own a pump that says 3" on it, but dammit it just doesn't like them. The crimp hangs on while ejecting. I've cleaned it and polished everything and I just have no faith in it. My 11-87 is the go-to gun for hunting.

Both pump and semiauto should give you good service if properly maintained.

Semis tend to be a bit heavier. They are more expensive and take a little longer to clean. But they offer a quicker follow up shot. They also have a softer felt recoil (the gas operated ones).

Personaly I prefer the semiautos. I like a flawless mechanical action that auto-cycles smoothly. But I have nothing against pumps.

Buy whichever you like most. Don't pay attention to what your friends might think. It's YOUR hard earned money. Spend it the way YOU like.

well i have never shot a semi but i know that i can get my shots off pretty quick out of an 870. And just like everybody else says. Buy what you like

Any time either a semi or pump fails it's most often the user's fault.

The semi will fail if you didn't clean and lubricate it properly, keep track of the state of o-rings and other little parts or you put in ammo that isn't strong enough to work the action.

The pump will fail if you don't pump it firmly. I hate to see people babying their pump guns. PUMP HARD!

The semi doesn't require as much practice to shoot well but the time spent with a pump gun is fun and worth the effort.

I can't decide which one I like better and think both have their place in the scheme of things.

I use a pump for ducks. I find that my 2nd shot is not as accurate as my 1st shot. Working the pump action throws off my aim. I am much more accurate with an O/U or semi on follow up shots.

With the exception of a "trick shooter", you won't find too many guys that can shoot an autoloader faster and more accurately, than a experienced pump gunner can shoot.
