So I'm think addicted to .22 rimfire!
I've had a few .22 caliber firearms over the years (a couple 10/22s, SR22, MnP22 pistol.)
I would always buy them, shoot them a bit, and basically forget about them. I ended up selling a couple and the rest usually just collect dust all year. Just never really got into it.
I recently got a Ruger American Rimfire compact .22lr. Total impulse buy. Was kicking myself the whole way home for buying it. Didn't figure I'd ever end up shooting it, but mounted up a scope and hit the range just to justify the purchase. That gun was so much fun to shoot that I went back and shot it again a couple days later, along with the 10/22 takedown. Brought them out again today. Been out shooting more in the last week than I usually do in a year. I don't know what's changed, but I'm having a friggin blast shooting these guns.
For my next acquisition, I'd like an iron-sighted, tube-fed .22 in either pump or lever action. Always liked lever guns, but I'm very intrigued by the idea of a 22 pump gun. It will be a multi-purpose rifle for fun plinking, shooting the odd grouse, and maybe a bit of pest control.
My criteria is as follows...
Must be current production.
I'd like something accurate. Is one type of action typically more accurate than the other?
I'd like to be able to mount a good rear peep sight, preferably without having to modify anything (ie; drilling/tapping.)
I'd really like something quick and easy to field strip. Pump or lever?
I'd expect it to be capable of reliably feeding and firing short rounds as needed.
I want something that can be dry-fired without causing any damage to the gun. Not that I plan to be purposely dry-firing it a whole bunch, but I find that with repeaters, unless they are semi auto and have a last round bolt hold, I tend to keep firing until I hear a click. Usually having too much fun to be counting my shots or looking in the chamber after every shot.
Can you help me decide between a pump and a lever? Which do you like better, and why? I'm really leaning toward a pump, but haven't ruled out a lever by any means.
Are there any other parameters to consider that I haven't listed?
What models do you suggest? What's your favorite pump/lever gun? Feel free to post pics!
Thanks.
