pump vs semi for competition

So last year a couple guys at our local club started doing shotgun 3 gun style competitions and I was running a moss 500 but now would like to get something more dedicated and I'm thinking about a pump with 8+1 OR MORE vs a semi being capped at 5 but more speed thoughts?
 
I'm in the same boat, or just about. With the difference of capacity, I think the pump has an advantage. At least here in Canada, if the stage calls for enough rounds to empty the gun it all comes down to how much time on the clock is spent trying to feed the thing. I don't think you can load and shoot 9 from a semi as fast as you can dump 9 from a loaded pump.
I just ordered a 590 from cabelas, I'll have a better idea in a few months what wors best.

When it's a Versa Max with 7 in the tube, one on the lifter, and one in the chamber, you certainly can.

A 3.5" semi pinned to hold less than 6 3.5" in the mag, will hold 7 2 3/4" shotshells. All nice and legal.

Or get a pump gun with a giant Nordic extension on it to run 10+ rounds in the tube.

A lot will depend on what rules your local 3 gun has, too.
 
An 8+1 pump is nice, but for competition use, a lighter weight gun than the 590A1 would be my pick.
Either the non heavy barrel 590SP, 500 Persuader, or the 20" Hatsan Aimguard which I love due to it's ultra light weight and extremely easy aiming/pointing. All 8+1 guns with either regular field stocks or SGA stocks.
 
I just bought a benelli M4 and I can fit 8 rounds of 2.75" in the gun. After trying my M4 2 weeks ago I'm confident that it's way faster than my old rem870.

For a short course Fire, I can see the pump has the advantage for the first 9, especially if starting the stage loaded, after the 9 or 10 rnds everything is even , it's now a question who reload fast on the blaster,

I'm much faster with my Versa Max both in shooting speed and reload.

The pump only ever has an advantage if it has more rounds in it than the semi. Course length and round count can make a significant contribution to evening it out, though. For example, if the CoF has 13 shots and the pump shooter starts with 11, and the semi 9 (or less), in all likelihood the pump guy will be faster as he has less rounds to reload, provided he's as fast at reloading as the semi guy.

Me too. The larger loading port makes a big difference.
 
I run a mka 1919 with couple mags but i'm hoping that the new 11round mags for the sap6 from tactical imports will work if I cut a mag catch hole in the side
 
If you gonna go pump you might as well maximize your mags, otherwise stay with a semi. It still boils down to the operator,

Before you start drilling holes in the mags, be aware that modifying them to be used in your Akdal will make them prohibited devices.
If they don't work as is, legally you are SOL.

Gents, which VM do you have, thinking of getting a VM too as a backup for 1301 or the either way, thanks

I've got a Tactical. I've seen guys run regular 26" VMs, 28" VM Sportsmans, and even VM Turkey models with, I believe, 21" or 22" barrels and FO rifle sights.

All versions seem to work equally well (depending on the shooter).

I think many are missing the point that thus is an apples/oranges situation.
Semi's and pumps shouldn't be competing against each other in a match in the first place.

Agreed.

And if you're competing for fun (like most of us) you should buy a pump AND an automatic.

Get good with both, and compete with both. Have fun with both.
