So I went to the range yesterday with a couple pumpkins and half a bag of almost moldy oranges. Took my Norinco .45, 38 wadcutter, .44cal blackpowder and my .22. My 44cal blackpowder pistol did the most damage to the pumpkins so im thinking that id like to trade one of my seldom used 9mm's for a .357. I saw the devestation that a .357 has on a watermelon so.... Anyway here are some pics. I set them at 10yds and 20yds

A buddy of mine shot at a watermelon with his 357mag a few weeks ago. Him and i balsted at it with out 45's and did minimal damage to the melon. That is until he hauled out his 357. First shot blew it in half, second shot blew one half into tiny pieces and the third shot did the same with the other half.
Biodegradable targets are fun. Cabbage shooting sounds pretty cool. Good way to make cole slaw after a "hard" day of shooting :D

Next time if you really want to see something amazing punch a couple of holes in the top of the pumpkin and fill it with water. THEN hit it with the highest velocity round you have. There won't be anything left to aim at for a second shot.....

A water filled 10'ish inch pumpkin hit with a S&W500 out of a 15 inch barrel TC Encore pretty much vaporizes..... :D A reduced recoil 12ga slug leaves nothing bigger than postage stamp sized blobs.

The fun factor diminishes exponentially when a ricochet whizzes past your left ear. Let’s keep it safe out there kids.

Thanks for that suggestion BCRider. I may have to do exactly that after Halloween. Im sure the grocery store will have leftovers they will be willing to donate to the cause.
gnmontey, SAFETY was totally taken into consideration when i was at the range.

There's a pumpkin FARM up the road from me, they're about to sell out on post season pumpkins this year. Kokanee King, how do you find the brass framed BP revolver? Any durability issues? I'm getting into the smokey stuff big time.

So far so good with it. It shoots awesome but then again she is my first, BP that is. The only real issue I had with it was when i got home and drew it a nice hot soapy bath. I had a wee bit of a time disassembling it. The pin that separates the barrel from the frame slid out easy enough but it wouldnt "break" apart after that. I ended up running it under hot water and scrubbing it with my old toothbrush to get the crud out. Once that was done it came apart and i was able to detail clean it. After i cleaned it i applied oil liberally on all the parts where it got stuck. I did oil it before but im thinking maybe not enough??
Accuracy wise i was able to "smoke" the pumpkin from 20yds. Im sure as time goes by I will get better with it but for now its my new "cool" factor gun :D

I've always wanted to see what a 338 win mag would do to a really big pumpkin, like 200-300 lb.

It's on my list of things to do.

Let me know where you can get a 338 these days. They don't appear to exist anymore!

Back on topic... now

Have you tried vaporizing gohpers at 200m with a 300win mag? It's great fun! Nothing but glue 4' beyond the POI.

The pumpkins look fun too... just watch out for ricochets in that rock quary you appear to be shooting at.

KK and smokindonuts, a BIG mistake with black is to use regular petro based gun oils. It results in very tarry and hard to clean residue. The hot setup is actually vegtable based oils or Ballistol gun oil. I shot my BP Remingtons this summer using canola oil as a lube. That's right, a cooking oil. And following some rust testing on some raw steel I'm happy with it for short term storage up to 6 to 8 weeks. Beyond that it starts to gel and gets hard to clean away. But for shooting days it's the bee's knees. The fouling cleans away easily in hot soapy water with just a light brushing from a bristle brush for the bore and a tooth brush for the rest. No bronze needed. And best of all it doesn't lock up the cylinder. I'm using my guns in CAS events and they run flawlessly, in terms of not gumming up, all day. That's 25 shots per gun and no issues. Apparently that's pretty good for shooting BP.

Fill it with water. The hollow nature of pumpkins makes they a little boring otherwise. You gotta make it more like a watermelon so the shock of the high velocity has something to conduct it.

NOT a rock quarry at all. Its an approved range and its a gravel pit built to the guidelines set out by that handy dandy range guideline clubs must follow to become approved. The boulders you see are from the excessive amounts of rain we Wet coasters get each day,our rocks do indeed grow. :D
