I bring to people today a true and proper punt gun. This is my 6 ish bore punt gun, it was missing the nipple when I got my hand's on it repaired with a bolt and drill and tap for a nipple on top. I have no history for this gun other then it was made around 1890 and the barrel it's self is 76 inches long. The information I have gathered from cleaning and sending a endoscopic camera down the bore that this gun was relived bore with how the powder chamber is larger then tapers then opens up then hits what choke there is, I have little understanding of it or why it was done I believe it was to get higher velocity out of BP of the day been that of cannon powder from the ammo breakers. This gun was legally Imported as a antique in November 2024.

There is a member here on the forum (at least I think he is) who aqiured a punt gun some 10 or 12 yrs ago.
If I recall he is from Region 2-04 closer to the Fraser River.
Foggy memory if he ever shot it for cause and effect or jst for schitz and giggles.
Cool find for you and good job on the repair.

My grandfather had an old punt gun mounted on an original punt boat that I use to play in when I was a kid.I use to pretend I was shooting down enemy airplanes in it.Unfortunately in was destroyed in a barn fire by a careless relative before I was old enough to acquire it

I am sorry to hear of the destruction of the piece and accompanying punt, if the mood ever struck you could always rebuild the punt and atleast make a flintlock gun like the first one or a pipe and some wood will do the job make a nice lawn or dock ornament.

Any ideas about the origin of the gun? The lock and hammer look French in style.
The lock is thought to have been salvaged from another gun possibly unrelated to fowling from what I could gather when I popped the lock of it is more in line with the continental construction but I have hound any tell tell signs of were and when.
