Purchased New S&W 686... Does not look new

Looks like a normal test fire by the factory....clean it up and shoot it.
Seriously, looks like less then a cylinder was shot....

The s&w factory used to fire proof cartridges in all 6 chambers.

Proof cartridges are expensive, and S&W was looking for cost cutting measures so
someone pointed out that they only needed to fire in 3 alternating chambers to check for cracks.

I see they have added a 4th proof cartridge, their profit margins must have increased slightly.

Cept for the whole pesky "he paid for new he should get new" thing. Goto any large store the sells pistols and take a look. Been down to CSC many times with my son (a LEO) and have never seen something as described. Maybe because Im ol' I feel the need to get what I pay for. I would send it back and tell us who the seller is. Let some other knucklehead buy the _new_ gun.

Ok, from the powder marks on the cylinder I can see how there was only 3-4 shells put through it, fine I'd be ok with that. But the fact that the gun looks like its been bouncing around in someone's glove compartment for a month is not ok with me. I did look at this gun at cabella's before purchasing online and that one looked "new". Guess I will be contacting the seller to see what my options are and see if they will stand behind their product. I've read some different stories about this particular sellers customer support so I guess we'll find out.

I know that I was disappointed in the finish of my new 629, which looks like someone wiped it down with 600 grit, but I put that down to the times we are in, where if you don't buy semi-custom, you're not getting the quality that we used to.

I'm going to opt for blued in the future, where an option exists.

Can't believe how many people will put up with getting an used gun...when paying new...
It's unreal.

Could you post more pictures of the rest of the gun? Interested to see how the rest of it looks.. by the sounds of it it's pretty beat up..

I was checking out a new one at a shop recently and it was as you describe also. I think it's just from factory testing. Lots of powder in a big 44 mag round so I suspect a couple rounds would leave her looking a little dirty. No big deal just keep on shooting!

The old 686's are so much nicer than the new ones... hard to tell by those blurry pics the OP posted. As long as the finish isn't marred, there is not much of an issue that I can tell, from the blurry pics.

My 357 got dirty after just a few rounds, could be from test firing at the factory. If there is noticeable wear on the exterior of the gun, you may have gotten a well handled display model or a used one. Hard to say.
