It’s been about 5 years since I have purchased a new handgun from a store here in Alberta. I was thinking about buying a new one this coming weekend, and was wondering what the process and requirements are these days? Are you able to take it home the same day?

Thanks

My experience has been - If not the next day, then the day after that.

Having said that, I have heard of individuals taking them home the same day.

Probably depends on how reactive the vendor is and how busy the CFO is.

You can generally count on next-day approvals. Over weekends, I don't know if you might have to wait until Monday.

You'll need a restricted PAL and current membership at a shooting range in order for the process to be as quick as possible.

Lucky you! haha. I bought a pistol from a local retailer and it is coming up on 3 weeks now.

That aside, make sure you bring an appropriate transport case when you go to pick it up. I've had a retailer refuse to let me leave with the gun because the plastic case it came in didn't work.. despite being opaque, closed, and having put a lock on it.

Silly retailer...

Thanks to all of those who replied. Looks like things haven't change since the last time I bought one.

That seems a little ridiculous doesn't it? Why the hold up?

What was wrong with that?

The holdup seems to be on the retailers side and them waiting on the one way ATT to take it home. (I find it odd as I have a Long Term ATT to that store because it has a range in it)
Oh well, chances are the transfer is taking some of that time too.

The case on the other hand was them being really picky. Sister bought a gun and we went to pick it up. I placed a trigger lock on the pistol and used a key lock on the loop that held it closed but they said that wasn't enough. Wouldn't let us leave with it like that and then proceeded to sell my sister an expensive transport case. I was furious but she did need a good case for the range so it did work out.

Depends on how busy the retailer is. If they are importing 200 glocks on a prebuy or something, you will be waiting longer than a mom and pop shop that sells one Restricted every other weekend.

I just bought a new Sig...it was a little after 4 in the afternoon. The first thing the next morning I called the CFO's office to confirm the transfer, and had the 'paperwork' by email in about 15 minutes. It's possible that if I had called the afternoon before, it _might_ have been processed the same day [apparently the office closes at 4:30PM].

I would say that if you made your purchase earlier in the day, you could get it on the same day. It probably depends on various factors...like how busy the CFO's office is, but you could give it a whirl.

I agree,go as early as possible. Mondays are a pain dealing with the CFO though since I had bought mine late Friday night. After finally getting a hold of thCFO monday afternoon my papaers were email Tuesday morning
