As I am close to the US border. So is it better to purchase and have it delivered to a US site close to the border and declare it to come back? Or, is it just better to have it shipped directly to Ontario? Any thoughts on where to purchase Dillon reloading equipment, other than from Dillon? Or is purchasing directly from Dillon the best way to proceed?

I purchased my 650 from a retailer in Alberta. The basic price was the same and the shipping from Dillon was more than from the retailer. There shouldn't be any issues re: importing, so its all down to the price, exchange rate (and fees) and the shipping cost. Side note - don't let UPS try and BS you that you have to pay their outrageous brokerage fees. You can tell them you want to self-clear the customs paperwork in the city you are located in and avoid all of that. They will try to tell you that you have to go to the border at original point of entry to clear customs. This is not true and there is lots of information explaining how its works on Google.

Depends on what and how much you buy.....
I've always dealt with Dillon directly.
When I ordered my first press and related gear the order was over $800.
The $80 shipping to my door was no biggie by comparison.
Small parts if shipped USPS are no problem. Sometimes you get ding'd for taxes, but not every time.
Anything labelled "warrantee parts" has come through without taxes being levied

Send it to your us address. Shipping is much cheaper. If you bring it back with a few people in the car chances are good you wont have to pay the pst and gst on it. You will for sure if you send it here.

I ordered my 650 straight from Dillon about a month ago. I ordered it on a Sunday night and it was at my door on the following Thursday. I didn't just order the press, I ordered all the accessories/conversions/dies as well. Shipping was about $175 plus I had to pay taxes at the door.

ups duty fees are such a rip off it should be called the fraud of the year. I try to avoid UPS as much as I can.
just my point of view of course.

I bought my Dillon 550 from Shooting Edge in Calgary. Price was the same as Dillon, and no exchange costs. I picked it up at the store so no shipping either. I have ordered lots of conversion kits, powder measures direct. They were not that much cheaper than local but they were immediately available. I had them shipped USPS small box and the shipping was pretty reasonable.

UPS are a bunch of lying crooks. I avoid them at all costs. MikeTheRock - Thanks for the info about self clearing customs. If I ever run into something that MUST be shipped UPS I will use that to avoid getting ripped off by those hose bags.

where I live there is no nearby CBSA office, so I cant do that. They will not do it by phone. What a stupid rip-off.
Last time I called, I told them : So as a canadian citizen, there is no way for me to pay my taxes to the canadian governement other than getting ripped off by ups or fedex? He said no, sorry.
OMG.
Why cant the canadian govt just send me a damn tax bill by the mail when I get a package? Why do I have to pay a random company an outrageous fee to get my stuff into canada? Eh.

USPS is our friend. Avoid FEDEX like plague.

My last order from Sinclair on there website had only Ups as shipping option. I closed the browser and called them to place the order and requested them USPS they did it.

Mush

Yeah. Fedex are horrible crooks. I will not buy anything from the states unless they will ship for free or (if I am paying) by USPS.

They rape going both ways. FedEx and UPS. I just mailed back aviation headsets to the USA. The company asked me to ship Canada Post so they don't get raped in brokerage fees.

Last Sept I tried to order a 650 and lots of extras from another newer business on the board and had not recieved it yet. i saw this thread and all i can say is John @ Custom Reloading is the way to go!!! ordered last Monday, arrived today. Price was lees than direct from Dillon when u include shipping. In the end the original business lost out double becuase i bought 2 machines as John had them on hand.
cheers

I purchased my Dillon 650 and accessories from Ellwood Epps. You're in Stoney Creek so it's less than 2 hours to get to Epps in Orillia as long as you are no traveling on a Friday of a long weekend.
Give Epps a call to see if they have what you want in stock. Its worth the drive, and you can pick up powder and components at the same time. The couple of items that I wanted, and Epps didn't have. I ordered direct and shipping ended up being very little as it was just primer pickup tubes and such.
Send me a PM and I'll add a little more info.
