There is a first time for everything & we all been through that, if you know what am I talking about As stevez said Get a CZ 858 & since it's not available get the Civilian variants which is CSA VZ58, can't go wrong with it & you will probably keep it for long it lasts. As long you respect the firearms, you don't need to worry about whether it's a bolt or semi or any kinda accident & tegu teach you that in the course. wow 1000 budget....get a sks, cheap .22, and a shotgun...probably a bit of ammo for each too lol.
My first two guns were a .22lr (Rem. 597) and a 12 gauge (Rem. 870). My suggestion to you, if you can spend between $800 - $1,000, would be to get a .22lr like a Rem. 597 or Ruger 10/22, a pump action shotgun, and maybe an SKS. The .22lr because they are cheap to shoot and are great for target practise, a shotgun cause they are a blast and what guy doesn't want a 12 gauge? And an SKS because they are relatively cheap, ammo's cheap (for a high powered rifle), and high powered rifles are also a blast! My only advice with regards to the SKS is to have Wolverine show you how to strip it down and clean it...they can be a bit finicky, especially if you are new to shooting and firearm ownership. I suggest these three as you are not just limiting yourself to one firearm but three, which starts you off with a really nice collection, all are relatively cheap to purchase and cheap to feed ammo, and having a little variety is always nice! Not too mention all can be used for hunting purposes, depending on what you are hunting! Hope this helps!

I don't know if making your first firearms purchase from wolverine is the best idea for several reasons (I know they ruined it for me in several ways):
1. They'll rob you of your desire to visit any other gun shops (why would you want to deal with anyone else?)
2. Their prices on lots of items are low enough you can't afford not buy them (your bank account may end up disagreeing)
3. Your mailman (and your family, and neighbors) will start to become suspicious of you when you start having shipments arrive every other week (Wolverine makes it too easy and regret free to purchase from them just once)
4. Their service is too good. It makes me suspicious; there must be something else going on behind the scenes that they're trying to hide.
It's your life and your money though, so do what you like with it, that's just my take on the Wolverines' operation.
I'm new to the scene too, so that's about all the advice I can provide, other than I went with the SKS because it's the next cheapest thing to shoot after a .22 (practice makes perfect), you can hunt deer with it, they're cheap, and you can get 1440 rounds for under $250 bucks! My next 2 will be a 12 gauge and .22 to provide some variety and options for different game, followed by a 308 or something along those lines for more serious deer hunting.

I know you have decided to go with a semi, may I ask why?
This is what I would suggest, CZ 455 Varmint
It will teach you how to shoot properly, It will not forgive you when you make a mistake, It will teach you to slow down to make the shot, you will not flinch(bad habit to get rid off) or get tired with a 22,
ammo is so cheap and you can shoot more which the old saying goes practice makes it blah blah blah.
It can also teach you how to shoot to 1 mile only with 200 yard range needed(if that's your coup of tea).
If you are really set on a semi I will suggest a ruger 10/22 which is the next best thing.
