being a canadian and having all the proper paper work to purchase handguns etc in canada. is it possible to legaly buy handguns in the states and bring them back to canada, like will american gunshops sell to canadians who have the proper Canadian papers?

any information you have would be apreshaited :)

It can be done for most handguns that would be restricted in Canada. It is time consuming and you have to jump through multiple hoops. Supporting dealer Questar International(see banner add above) has a import service. You pay a fee and they do all the leg work for you. Members have said even including the fee and any applicable tax they still save a fair bit of money.

Good luck.:)

It isn't legal for a Canadian to posses (never mind buy) a firearm in the US without proper paperwork from the US government. It's also illegal for a US dealer to sell a Canadian a gun without the proper paperwork -PAL/RPAL/12.x means absolutely nothing in the FOREIGN COUNTRY to the south of us. At a minimum you have to have a hunting license and as far as I'm aware an "alien number" from immigration and a form from ATFE.
If the gun's legit (or can be made legit - a la Glock 26 etc.) it's much safer to deal with Questar (if you screw up ATFE are unlikely to cut a foreign national with a 'weapon' any slack and they don't have to under the Patriot Act) and probably when you add all costs in, Questar will be cheaper too.

This is not complicated, but if you are a person who cannot be bothered to read this long thread you probably won't want to pursue this notion any further.

Importing Firearms, Ammunition and Parts from the USA

If - on the other hand - you are a person motivated enough to read this long thread you'll then understand the process and be prepared to undertake it.

A Canadian CAN NOT buy a firearm in the USA. Period.

That statement is absolutely WRONG.

Any Canadian can pickup the phone or email any US Dealer (or even individuals) and buy a firearm.

Our customers do it all the time... the catch is you can't take possession of it in the US and the problem is that most US sellers aren't able to apply for or get export permits to ship or transport the firearm out of the US to get it to you...

Having said that here are a few things to be aware of:

  • The US Vendor cannot legally give you possession of the firearm, they are required to either ship it to another US FFL dealer in the US or ship it out of the country;
  • In order to export a firearm out of the country the US Vendor would need to be a Registered ITAR Exporter and that costs them $1,750.00 per year to register (plus other costs)... most US vendor are NOT registered exporters so they can't even apply for an export permit;
  • Before they can export a firearm they have to get an approved DSP-5 Export Permit from US State Department (or in the case of a sporting shotgun from US Commerce Department);
  • For any person (resident or non-resident) to take possession of a firearm in any US State they have to show that they have been a legal resident in that State for at least 90 days prior to taking possession (Canadian snow-birds can legally buy and take possession of a firearm in the US if they meet a number of conditons including this one mentioned);
  • For a non-resident alien to be in possessioni of a firearm while in the US he/she must meet one of several conditions (a US issued hunting license will satisfy this requirement);

If you see a gun you like in the US you can buy it (in person or remotely)... you just need to get the seller to transfer the firearm to a US Registered Exporter (like Questar) who will get an Export Permit from the US government and will transport the firearm to Canada, clear customs, register the firearm into the Canadian system and transfer the firearm to your name.

One last catch... the firearm you buy has to be "importable" to Canada (ie. not classified as a "Prohibited" firearm, weapon or device and the firearm also has to be "exportable" from the standpoint of US State Department (as many items that are perfectly legal to own in the US and in Canada are in fact "controlled" and their export is restricted by State Department.

My understanding of this question was " Hi, can a Canadian walk into a gun store, buy a handgun and take to the border and bring it into Canada". So the way I read it, I think I am correct. A Canadian can not buy and take possession of a firearm in the USA. I agree, the easiest way to do it is to call Questar and have them do it for ya...

Like Questar said, I purchased 4 gun's directly from Gunsmith in the USA and got Questar to properly import them, my cost was relatively small for the result.

Shouldn't the focus be on supporting Canadian retailers? A little extra cost is worth it for the privilege of having in house sales and support. Questar is great and importing is fine too, assuming that you cannot get the same thing in house.

Every time you buy from the US when the same thing is available from a Canadian...god kills a kitten. Please...think of the kittens.

If you CAN find a dealer that has the particular firearm you interested in at a reasonable price...

Not every pistol available in USA is available up here.

Also 1 more thing...

Dealers in the USA deal in larger volumes therefore have cheaper prices. Now if you add in the CAD dollar being at or near par you could probably find some pretty good bargains South of the border, even AFTER Questar takes off their importation fees.

I am all for supporting home grown gun dealers and gunsmiths but sometimes you find something SOUTH of the border that you cannot get up here...

In some cases, one can order a gun done to his/her specs (read-customized) in the US and then start import process. It MAY be worth it due to availability or prices or time saving...
