Purchasing my first handgun. Need suggestions.

There may be 2 handguns in my near future. A .22 and ???

A 9mm is a good next step as it has been suggested. I only have experience with a Browning Hi-Power, Sig 225, Glock 17, and a Glock 19. My favorite if the four is the Glock 19. I have shot about 1000 rounds through my Glock 19, and not had any problems. Maintenance is pretty straight forward compared to the Hi-power, and Sig and I like the smaller frame of the 19 compared to the 17. And the glocks manual of arms is straightforward and I like the consistent trigger pull of a striker fired pistol.

Bottom line, my recommendation is a Glock 19, or a Glock 17 if you have big honkin' hands

I am new to the sport of target shooting with a handgun. I know the rules about belonging to a range / club so I just want some ideas for purchasing something I will be pleased with. My budget is $500.00 +-. I would prefer a semi automatic. My eye has gone to a Ruger 9mm or possibly a 1911 / 45. There are also 1911's in 9mm. That's about it so I look forward to your opinions and suggestions.

Sorry, just remembered this. Glock's (at least here in Canada) are going to be out of your price range. Even for a used on. Sorry! If you up your budget you will find a much better selection. The S&W MP 9mm is not too far away in price.

You will spend far more on ammo than most any gun you buy.. just a thought

I bought a Ruger SR9 from someone off CGN for my first restricted and it couldn't have been more perfect. Great value and shoots awesome.

Buuuut you can't beat the price of ammo for a .22, if $$ is a concern for ammo.

Presumably, you are a member at a range, so I would buy a .22 and then go on club night and ask nicely to shoot other peoples pistols with ammo that you have brought with you. As a bonus, if you buy a quality .22 pistol (like Epps has a long barrel Ruger Hunter right now) people will be lined up to shoot it, even if they regularly shoot 45 acp...
