I got this older Rem 700 mountain rifle a while back, it was in excellent shape but i noticed the bolt handle was a different color, have you seen this before? Kinda neat.

It is the alloy that causes this.
Some alloys take bluing slightly different than others.
Some early Ruger 77 bolt actions had "purple" receivers.
Nothing to be concerned about.

I am not sure but it may have been re-blued and the body polished and re-jeweled. The handle appears buffed and sharp edges no longer there... if that is true, the bluing salts were a bit weak or the temperature not quite right. Normally Remington handles blue better than that. Do you know if it has been re-blued? A better picture of the complete bolt will tell me more.

I dont think its been reblued, the gun appeared unfired when i bought it. It is an 80's rem 700 bolt which didnt have sharp edges like the newer ones do.

Purple Remington.

My Remington Mountain Rifle's handle is same colour. I bought new in 1986 and noticed the the handle start to change after a few years. I figured it was very hard steel used on bolt. You'll see that colour on re-blued milsurp rifles also ie: P14/1917's, Russian captured/refurbed K98's. Especially extractors.

Parts will come out purple if they are not left inside the hot bluing tank for the correct amount of time and heat.

the bolt on my Winchester super grade has a little bit of that purple hue but not nearly as dramatic. I like it.
