Purpose of flat area milled off of AR barrel?

Hey guys,

Anyone know the purpose of the flat spot on this barrel?

I am assuming weight savings... it came this way and has been parkerized so I am assuming it is intentional and not an accident.

Sorry I have no idea why a company would do that. I am a toolmaker and as far as I can see all that flat does is add another operation to the manufacturing process.

A place to put a level so you can ensure the barrel is indexed?

Or a place for the jig to engage when drilling the front sight base, for the same reason?

None of my AR barrels exhibit that flat.

I'd always thought that what made a Government Profile was that it was lightweight under the handguards and heavier forward of the sights.

if u mean just the flat spot in front of the delta ring, its there probably for their jig so that they can set it up for a FSB if needed and or depending on what the actual profile is, it maybe for the 203 launcher

u don't need to level an AR barrel, unless its been manufacture outta whack. Because that's what the index pin is for on the barrel extension

My guess is for a jig to set the FSB in the right place. They probably use that flat for a leveling device to ensure the taper pins are drilled at the correct angle.

To the OP: Which model do you have? What is the barrel length?

It's the 10.5" complete upper deal w/bolt that was being sold by a few sponsors; I got it on a trade.

It does look weird doesn't it? I contacted High-standard and they haven't replied (probably won't.)
At any rate it's a project that is now on the backburner.
