I've spent a lot of my evening cleaning my stainless SW 686.

Cleaning the blackened exterior of the cylinder was not fun. It was the dirtiest I've seen it as I fired over 300 rounds out of it today.
I was using Hoppes 9 in my attempt.

Can anyone recommend a cleaning product that makes life easier?

Thanks!

Start with a bronze brush and your choice of solvent. Follow up with a Kleen Bore Lead Away patch. Works like a charm in that dirty cylinder face.

That brushed stainless is damned hard to keep clean. You have to do something to make it smoother. Either polish the steel or use some sort of filler, like a good silicone based car/boat polish.

The brushed stainless is a pain, I have a polished stainless revolver and it is the greatest thing to clean, no solvents just a bronze brush for the barrel and cylinder and a rag to clean the outside.

I use G96 in an aerosol can on my 686

Let sit for 2 minutes and it just wipes off

I use Bullseye and it's dirty

The lead on the front face of the cylinder gets

a brass wire wheel run on the bench grinder

Hoppes Elite bore gel works better than most things I've tried. Paint it on with a brush and wait 10 minutes, then wipe off.

I clean my with those Lead Away cloths. Kleen Bore, Birchwood Casey and Hoppes are a couple of the brands out there. Works well for me. I only do this once in a while because it doesn't stay like that for long. ;)
